Sometimes it is tempting to think a child is simply trying to avoid school.

However, recurring tummy aches and headaches can sometimes be connected with anxiety, stress or overload.

Children donโ€™t always have the words to say:

โ€œIโ€™m worried about what will happen today.โ€

โ€œThe classroom feels too much.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m frightened Iโ€™ll get something wrong.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m having trouble keeping everything together.โ€

Instead, their body may do the talking for them.

That doesnโ€™t mean we should assume every symptom is anxiety โ€” physical symptoms deserve appropriate medical attention.

Yet it is also worth becoming curious about what is happening around the symptom.

Sometimes understanding the brain-body connection gives us a very different way of supporting a child.

Yes โ€” and the pain can be very real.

A tight chest before the school run.
A headache after a difficult meeting.
A sore neck after weeks of deadlines.
A clenched jaw when youโ€™ve been carrying everyone elseโ€™s needs.

Anxiety doesnโ€™t only affect your thoughts.

When the nervous system stays on alert, muscles can remain tense, breathing can change, sleep can become disrupted and the brain can become more sensitive to pain signals.

Sometimes we keep treating the sore neck, headache or aching back without asking:

What has my nervous system been dealing with lately?

Physical symptoms should always be appropriately assessed, particularly if they are new, severe or changing.

However, when medical causes have been investigated, looking at the connection between the brain, body and stress response can open another pathway forward.

Feel calmer?

Have fewer meltdowns?

Concentrate more easily?

Feel more confident?

Make better progress at school?

Enjoy learning again?

Or simply feel happier within themselves?

When there are several challenges happening at once, it can be difficult to know where to start.

So start with one question:

โ€œWhat change would make the biggest difference to my child and our family?โ€

What came to mind for you?

If you know what you would love to change but you're unsure where to begin, message me.

Sometimes the next step starts with a conversation.

What if something is making learning difficult for them?

It's an important distinction.

A student who avoids work may be overwhelmed by the task.

A student who constantly moves may be trying to regulate themselves.

A student who appears distracted may be struggling to maintain attention.

A student who becomes emotional may already be overloaded.

Behaviour gives us information.

Instead of only asking:

โ€œHow do we manage this behaviour?โ€

What if we also asked:

โ€œWhat does this student need to become calmer, more focused and ready to learn?โ€

Changing the question can change the way we see the child.

And that can change how we support them.

If this is a challenge in your classroom or school, message me. I work with educators to explore practical, movement-based approaches that support focus, emotional regulation and readiness for learning.

Meltdowns.

Refusing homework.

Anxiety before school.

Difficulty concentrating.

Big emotional reactions over seemingly small things.

It's easy to focus on stopping the behaviour.

But what if we asked a different question?

โ€œWhat is happening underneath this behaviour?โ€

Children can't always explain what they are feeling or why something feels so difficult.

Sometimes their behaviour communicates it for them.

Instead of only asking:

โ€œHow do I stop this?โ€

Try asking:

โ€œWhat might my child need right now?โ€

That question can open the door to a very different conversation.

If your child is struggling and you feel there may be something deeper getting in the way, send me a private message.

I'd be happy to have a conversation with you.

Our attention naturally goes to the students whose struggles we can see.

The disruptive student.

The child who won't sit still.

The student who refuses to work.

Yet what about the quiet ones?

The child who never asks for help.

The student who hides their anxiety.

The child who sits quietly but isn't processing the lesson.

The student who works twice as hard just to keep up.

A student doesn't have to be disruptive to be struggling.

Sometimes the question isn't:

โ€œHow do we improve this student's performance?โ€

It's:

โ€œWhat is getting in the way of this student being ready to learn?โ€

Sometimes a child can look like they are coping.

They get through school.
They hold it together.
They do what is expected.

Then they come home exhausted, emotional, anxious or overwhelmed.

And we wonderโ€ฆ

โ€œWhy does everything fall apart at home?โ€

Sometimes what we see as behaviour is telling us that a child has been working incredibly hard just to manage their day.

When so much energy goes into coping, there may be less available for:

โ€ข Concentration
โ€ข Learning
โ€ข Emotional regulation
โ€ข Confidence
โ€ข Everyday tasks

Hereโ€™s a question to think about:

Where is your child working really hard just to cope?

If this sounds familiar and you would like to explore what may be getting in the way for your child, send me a message.

Sometimes understanding the struggle is the first step towards creating change.
