Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has officially been renamed:
Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). ✨
The name change follows decades of discussion among researchers, clinicians, and patients who felt the term “PCOS” was misleading.
Because PCOS is not simply an ovarian condition — it’s a whole-body endocrine and metabolic condition that can affect hormones, insulin resistance, inflammation, fertility, skin, mood, energy, and more.
Even the term “cyst” has long been misunderstood.
The “cysts” seen in PCOS are usually not true ovarian cysts, but immature follicles — eggs that were not fully released during ovulation and remain in the o***y.
The new name, PMOS, better reflects the complexity of what women with this condition are actually experiencing 🤍
The official renaming was announced through a global consensus process published in The Lancet in May 2026.
