Prickly Pear or Cactus Fruit

Not a common fruit but has so many medicinal benefits like all of our fruit and veggies do!

Most people describe it as:

Sweet and mildly tangy…cooling and hydrating.
A mix between persimmon, passion fruit, and pear. Sometimes with a hint of berry-like flavour (like raspberry or strawberry). The texture is juicy and slightly grainy because of tiny edible seeds inside.

It’s called prickly for a very good reason - there are very sharp spines that cover the fruit and can stick into your skin - so please handle with care.
Advise wearing thick gloves. LOL!

Best eaten in warmer seasons, try adding a squeeze of lime juice. Great for easy inflammatory skin conditions.

Prickly pear carries a beautiful teaching… a protective exterior with deeply nourishing essence within. It reminds us that even in harsh environments, hydration, sweetness, and softness can thrive.

“Seasonal change is the body’s invitation to reset. As summer fades, Ayurveda encourages a gentle cleanse to clear accumulated heat and toxins.”

Let me explain….

During the summer months, the body often carries accumulated heat (Pitta), mild dehydration, digestive irregularity, and sometimes toxins (Ama) from irregular eating or travel.

This Ayurvedic cleanse gently clears excess heat while preparing the body for the colder, drier Vata season ahead.

The focus is not deprivation but resetting Agni (digestive fire) and supporting the body’s natural detoxification pathways and grounding the nervous system.

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times Series

2: Inclusion: Everyone Belongs

One of the most powerful medicines we often overlook is belonging.

In Ayurveda, health is not experienced in isolation. We are social beings by nature, and when we feel excluded, unseen or disconnected, the heart and nervous system suffer. Loneliness disturbs vata, (a combination of the air and space elements that represent the vata dosha) and will weaken ojas (our vital life essence), and slowly erodes our emotional and physical wellbeing.

The longest-living communities in the world don’t just tolerate difference, they include everyone. Elders, children, newcomers and those who are vulnerable all have a role. No one is invisible. Everyone belongs to something larger than themselves.

In these cultures:
• Meals are shared
• Stories are listened to
• Purpose is collective
• No one is left behind

Inclusion is deeply regulating. Oxytocin is the hormone of trust and connection and it increases, supporting immunity, heart health and emotional resilience. Belonging quite literally tells the body: You are safe here!

Exclusion, on the other hand, is processed by the brain as threat. Chronic feelings of ‘not fitting in’ can contribute to inflammation, anxiety, depression and long-term stress patterns. Healing loneliness requires more than positive thinking. It requires nourishment, rhythm, warmth and connection at every level of being.

Healing begins when the body, heart and mind feel safe…

Live well. Age gracefully. Stay connected.
This is the art of longevity.

Over the coming weeks I will be posting a combination of Ayurveda + Blue Zone wisdom that aims to provoke some deeper thinking about: The Art of Living Well Together! What I love most is that both systems arrive at the same truths from different directions: One through longevity science, the other through consciousness and dharma.

1: Ahimsa: Do no harm, especially with our words

In Ayurveda, speech is considered a powerful form of energy. Words carry prana: life force and once released, they can’t be taken back. They shape our inner world just as much as the outer one.

Harsh words, gossip, criticism and careless comments don’t just land on the other person… they also affect the speaker. They disturb the nervous system, agitate the mind, increase stress hormones and create inner imbalance. Over time, this can show up as anxiety, digestive issues, fatigue, inflammation and emotional heaviness.

So far in my Blue Zones research it showed something fascinating: the longest-living communities in the world share one common thread respectful communication. Elders are spoken to with care, disagreements are handled face-to-face, and gossip is minimal. Social harmony isn’t accidental; it’s cultivated through mindful speech.

This sense of belonging and emotional safety is a key factor in longevity.

From a neuroscience perspective, harmful speech activates the brain’s threat system. Sharp words, criticism and conflict can release cortisol and adrenaline. Over time, this keeps the nervous system in a chronic stress state - impacting digestion, immunity, sleep, memory and emotional regulation.

The consequences of harmful speech ripple outward:
• Relationships fracture
• Trust erodes
• Communities feel less safe
• The heart closes….on both sides

But when speech is kind, truthful and necessary, it becomes medicine. Gentle words calm the nervous system, strengthen connection and build resilience. They support ‘ojas’…our vital essence… and create harmony within and around us.

Before speaking, Ayurveda invites us to pause and ask:

Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it needed?
Is this the right time?

Choosing conscious speech is not about perfection it’s about responsibility. When we ‘do no harm’ with our words, we protect our health, our relationships and our collective wellbeing.

Words can wound… or they can heal…Choose wisely!
