HPV (human papillomavirus) is a common sexually transmitted virus that can affect anyone. It can cause ge***al warts and some types of cancer.

The HPV vaccine can prevent up to 90% of cancers caused by HPV infection.

School students in Year 7 can receive their free HPV vaccine through the School Immunisation Program.

The HPV vaccine protects against some cancers and almost all cases of ge***al warts that are caused by HPV.

While most children recover from a concussion within four weeks, 20-25% of children, like Xavier need extra time and care to return to normal activities.

Xavier missed the first two weeks of school and was restricted from using screens including laptops and television, and had to limit concentration periods. It wasn't until three months later that he was fully cleared to resume normal activities such as running and playing contact sport.

Xavier’s parents Tory and Mark Bickley (Adelaide Crows premiership captain) said, ‘Our family has seen first-hand how a concussion can have a serious impact on a child’s health.’

‘We can’t thank the team at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Flinders Hospital enough and encourage other parents to be careful after their child has a concussion.’

The Child and Adolescent Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service at the Women's and Children's Health Network has had 121 referrals so far this year – a third of which have been sports related.

As concussions can be hard to spot, parents are urged to look for subtle signs if their child suffers a head injury, including:

🔵 sensitivity to light and noise
🔵 confusion and difficulty concentrating
🔵 nausea and dizziness
🔵 mood changes
🔵 sleep changes.

Striving for good poo quality and improving the way you do a number two – can help you to prevent haemorrhoids.

Eating a healthy high-fibre diet, drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly (especially walking) is a good start. But be sure to increase your fibre intake gradually and at the same time increase your water intake too, so your digestive system has time to adapt.

Eliminating poo when your body tells you it is time, is also important. Don’t hold on, as this can make your poo hard, which can cause strain.

And finally try to avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods, which places pressure on blood vessels. It’s recommended not to read or scroll through your phone on the toilet, as this tends to increase sitting time.

Did you know that 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 will have a fall each year? Keeping active can help prevent falls.

After a fall, many older people become fearful of falling again and lose confidence in their mobility. This can lead to a person limiting their movements and reducing their activity – further increasing the fall risk.

Keep yourself safe and steady by looking at a range of issues, including what you wear, what medications you take and keeping your muscles strong.

💪Add strength and balance exercises, such as slow walking or chair yoga, into your day.
👓 Have your eyes checked regularly.
⚠️ Remove tripping or slipping hazards around the home and garden.
👟 Wear appropriate footwear.
💊 Speak regularly to your pharmacists about your medications.
🆘 Ask for help if you need it.

Before vaccination campaigns in the 1960s and 1970s, diseases like tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis) killed thousands of children.

Today, it is extremely rare for people to die from these diseases in Australia because of ongoing vaccination programs.

Protection produced by some vaccines will decline over time and booster doses may be needed to ensure high levels of protection are maintained.

A booster dose of diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (dTpa) is recommended and is offered to students in Year 7 for free through the School Immunisation Program.

Year 10 students in South Australia can receive free meningococcal ACWY and B vaccines through the School Immunisation Program.

The A, C, W and Y strains are all included in one vaccine. The B strain needs two doses of the vaccine. Make sure you get the second dose to be fully protected.

Two doses of the meningococcal B vaccine can increase protection against invasive meningococcal B disease in adolescents by over 80%.

Meningococcal infection, although rare, is serious and potentially life threatening. It can cause severe scarring, loss of limbs, brain damage and even death.
