Today, our Mirganha Program held a free community garage sale, creating an opportunity for local families to access much-needed items in a culturally safe, welcoming, and supportive environment.
The Mirganha Program is OLALC's Social and Emotional Wellbeing Program, supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families through culturally safe, trauma-informed support. Our program is about walking alongside our people, strengthening social and emotional wellbeing, building connections, and ensuring our families feel supported, connected, and valued.
Each year, OLALC receives hundreds of generous donations to help support our clients and community members in need. We are incredibly grateful for the kindness and generosity shown by our community. At times, we receive more donations than we have space to store, making events like our garage sales a wonderful opportunity to give these items back to those who need them most.
We know that asking for help isn't always easy. For some of our mob, it can bring feelings of shame or embarrassment. Our free garage sales helped break down these barriers by creating a space where people can come together, have a yarn, connect with community, and take what they need without having to ask.
This initiative is about more than just donations. It's about looking after our mob, supporting our families, protecting dignity, and strengthening community connections. We want our people to know there is no shame in needing a little extra support. We all need a hand sometimes, and that's what community is all about.
A special thank you from Jayden and Annissa (Family Practitioners) Leeny (Program Manager) and to everyone who continues to donate and support OLALC and our programs. Your generosity helps us care for our people and create stronger, healthier communities.
Thank you to everyone who came along today and helped make the event such a success!
