This week is National Stroke Awareness Week, a reminder that knowing the signs of stroke can save a life.

A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is suddenly reduced. This can quickly damage brain cells, so it is important to act fast.

Think F.A.S.T
Face, has the face or mouth dropped?
Arms, can they lift both arms?
Speech, is it slurred, or can they understand you?
Time, if you see any of these signs, call 000 immediately and ask for an ambulance.

Even if symptoms improve or go away on their own, it may have been a mini stroke. Please do not delay, call 000.

Other warning signs can include
• Weakness, paralysis, or loss of sensation, on one or both sides of the body
• Loss of vision, blurred vision, or a severe sudden headache
• Dizziness, loss of balance, or unexplained falling
• Drowsiness, loss of consciousness, or difficulty swallowing

You can lower your risk by managing blood pressure and cholesterol through a healthy diet, an active lifestyle, limited alcohol, and not smoking.
