Hello Spring, Hello September
A new month, a new season, fresh beginnings.
It’s a beautiful time of the year as we say goodbye to winter and its heaviness and welcome in spring with everything blooming or about to bloom.
While spring is a beautiful time of the year it’s also a time of transition as we move from one season into another. Our bodies can take a little time to adjust and one of the areas that can be affected is our sleep.
As winter ends and spring begins, we have warmer weather, longer daylight hours, changes in our exposure to light and those temperature swings that can happen as the seasons change.
For some of us this can bring what is often referred to as spring fatigue. Feeling tired, sluggish or just not quite ourself even though the days are getting brighter and there is more energy around us.
Then there’s our sleep.
The changes in daylight and temperature can affect our natural sleep wake rhythm and you may notice that you’re taking longer to fall asleep, waking during the night, waking earlier than usual or simply not feeling as rested when you wake.
Our body clock, or circadian rhythm, is constantly responding to light, darkness, temperature and our daily routines. When the seasons change, it can take a little time for our bodies to recalibrate.
If you’re someone who suffers from seasonal allergies, spring can bring another layer to this with increased pollen and allergy symptoms potentially making sleep even more difficult.
While we may be feeling excited to welcome spring, our bodies may be asking us to hang on and give me a moment or two to adjust.
This is a time to be gentle with ourselves and recognise that moving from the heaviness of winter into the lighter, more active energy of spring is a transition and sometimes transitions require a little extra support.
It’s time to let go of what we no longer need from winter. To welcome in the freshness and renewal of spring and to support our bodies, our nervous system, our energy and our sleep as we make that transition.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing some simple ways you can support your sleep, energy and wellbeing as we move through this seasonal transition.
Goodbye winter. Hello to beautiful spring.
