[Hair vs Pet's Fur: The 0.01mm* that Changes Everything 🐱]

Try running your fingers through your pet’s fur. That soft, silky fur is often as fine as about 0.01mm. By comparison, a human hair averages around 0.06mm thick.

Go back to the 1930s, and the raw rubber condoms on the market were even thicker and rougher than a human hair. That barrier felt like a cold wall standing between lovers.

Through the efforts of Sagami's founder Saku Matsukawa and her team, latex condoms were successfully developed. After they became widespread, the latex condoms eventually reached a world-record thinness of 36 microns. But Sagami refused to settle there.

To remove every cold barrier and to solve problems like latex allergy and the rubbery smell, Sagami boldly launched a material revolution in 1964, becoming one of the first to introduce non-latex polyurethane (PU) as condom material. PU successfully broke through previous limits. Sagami then pushed thinness even further, reaching 0.02mm^ and eventually the near-sensation-free realm of Sagami Original 0.01, a polyurethane (PU) condom in the 0.01mm range, as light as a pet’s fine fur, but at the same time, extraordinarily strong.

For Sagami, the pursuit of ultra-thin has never been just about numbers. It is a romantic revolution, one that restores real body heat and brings two people closer.

When the whole world says “it’s impossible”, would you still have the courage to press on?

In the 1930s, after Sagami succeeded in developing latex condoms far thinner than the thick, raw rubber ones on the market, the real challenge began. To promote this revolutionary product, founder Saku Matsukawa personally pushed a heavy rickshaw, visiting drugstore after drugstore door to door.

In an extremely conservative era, a woman stepping into the sexual health industry was met only with cold stares and slammed doors. "How can this thing ever be sold?" The doubts never stopped. At the hardest point, funds ran dry, and Saku was even forced to sell the pharmacy and the large house she owned.

Yet with uncompromising tenacity and a refusal to bow to fate, she firmly answered every doubt:
"The future must be the era of thin latex condoms."

Ultimately, her vision prevailed. The old thick products were left behind by the times, and thin latex condoms became the new mainstream. It was Saku’s uncompromising tenacity that broke the "thick and heavy" norm, shaping the seamless intimacy we enjoy today.

[The Safety Test Protecting Couples Since the 1930s 💕]

What does it take to protect the most intimate contact with complete peace of mind? For Sagami, this standard has been deeply rooted in the brand’s DNA since 1934, when Japan’s first latex condom was developed.

In the early days of Sagami nearly a century ago, there were no modern automated machines. Founder Saku Matsukawa and her team had to rely entirely on handcrafting, evenly coating latex onto moulds, turning them over, and baking them in heaters to form the shape. To ensure this paper-thin layer of latex was truly safe, the research team carried out extreme water capacity tests by pouring roughly the volume of a large teapot of water into each condom. The goal was simple yet demanding: to confirm that no matter how much pressure it faced, the condom would remain strong and completely intact.

This dedication to quality continues today. Modern Sagami not only produces according to International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standards, but also developed its own rigorous testing methods before the launch of Sagami Original 0.01. These include a water expansion test that specifically challenges the strength of the condom tip, and a friction tolerance test that simulates real intense use, ensuring protection that never fails.

Just as modern couples treat their furry companions as family and give them the warmest home, 92 years ago, Sagami’s founder Saku Matsukawa also chose to protect the homeless orphans of her time with the same deep sense of care and responsibility.

To solve the social tragedy caused by thick, fragile raw-rubber condoms, she joined forces with a research team and established the Asahi Latex Research Institute in 1934. Saku turned her compassion into concrete action, not only providing the orphans with shelter and education, but also hiring them as staff at the institute.

These once helpless children grew up surrounded by care and eventually became Saku’s most trusted research partners. Together, they pioneered a new path, conducting countless experiments until they successfully developed Japan’s first latex condom. The product achieved an unprecedented combination of thinness and strength, completely transforming the market.

The true purpose of a condom is to protect you and the ones you love. Japan’s first revolutionary latex condom was born from exactly this instinct, the deep urge to protect helpless lives. This spark of care was lit 92 years ago, marking the beginning of Sagami’s journey of protection.

Back in the 1930s, when Japan was still recovering from the Great Kanto Earthquake, condoms available at the time were primarily made from raw rubber, which is thick, heavy and prone to deterioration. Because of the poor experience, most men refused to use them. Unintended pregnancies rose sharply, and the streets were filled with abandoned children.

At the time, Sagami’s founder Saku Matsukawa was running a pharmacy. Hungry, homeless children would often come in to steal. Instead of reacting with anger or chasing them away, something deeper stirred within her, a strong instinct to protect. She understood that to break this painful social cycle, change had to start at the source: by creating thinner, safer condoms that people would actually want to use.

It was this gentle yet determined intention that set her on the path of revolutionary research and development.

When people talk about the pioneer of Japanese condom technology, few would imagine a woman from the 1930s. Yet that is exactly where the revolution began.

Saku Matsukawa was a female entrepreneur who, in the Showa era, broke gender boundaries with cutting-edge technology and redefined the value of condoms. At a time when women starting businesses was extremely rare, she stepped into the industry and founded the predecessor of Sagami. Her work laid the essential foundation for the official establishment of Sagami and, later, the globally acclaimed ultra-thin Sagami Original PU condoms.

What drove her was a single belief: protecting the future through choice. This revolutionary idea about intimate relationships has remained the soul of Sagami for over 92 years.
