Tube feeding is scary when you first start out.
Scary for children, parents, teachers, families and therapists who are new to the area. Itโ€™s often an experience filled contradicting feelings; worry about if and when it will end, grief for the way we thought this child would eat, frustration with setbacks along the way, but also relief that this child has a way to access nourishment safely.

One thing we know for sure is that tubie families have resilience in spades, and are the real experts when it comes to making tube feeding work. Our proverbial hats are off this Feeding Tube Awareness Week, weโ€™re sharing a few ideas for where to learn more about tube feeding. If youโ€™re a therapist who hasnโ€™t seen many tubies, one of the best things you can do is try to get a glimpse into what tube feeding looks like in real life. Have you ever seen a G-tube change? What does meal prep look like?

To be transparent, we're really bloody angry with the NDIA.

Angry that providers are being positioned by the government as greedy and discriminative.

Angry that our colleagues are facing a pay CUT.

But most of all?

Angry that our clients and their families will feel the effects of therapists being put under increasing pressure to deliver more with less resources.

At the end of the day, providers will need to increase their fees to stay open. It will be the participants and their caregivers that face paying out of pocket, or losing access to good quality supports.

We urge you to embrace your own anger and send a strong message to your local MP, and make a formal complaint to the NDIA.

Bonus 7th slide for a jump scare.

Hands up if you ~actually~ know what a Paediatric Dietitian does? If you put your hand up in that โ€œhalf-way-up so maybe the teacher doesnโ€™t pick me cos I kinda know but Iโ€™m not sureโ€ way, donโ€™t stress. We have some cheat notes for you!

๐Ÿ Paediatric Dietitians are fully qualified with a Bachelor of Science university degree + added specialisation in paediatrics
๐Ÿ Dietitians help with nutrition and growth to keep your child as healthy as they can be, so they can reach their full developmental potential
๐Ÿ They also know a heck of a lot about medical conditions like food allergies, epilepsy, diabetes, tube feeding, coeliac disease, eosinophilic oesophagitis, metabolic conditions (and more)
๐Ÿ They absolutely are not just there to help people lose weight
๐Ÿ They are absolutely essential if your child is neurodivergent and having trouble getting enough to eat from across all the food groups (or on meds affecting appetite)
๐Ÿ Dietitians are also essential if your child has an eating disorder, including ARFID
๐Ÿ You may also need a Dietitian to advise on supplements, including vitamins, iron and nutritional drinks
๐Ÿ Paediatric Dietitians hold a lot more specialist training compared to a nutritionist, naturopath or wellness coach
๐Ÿ These two Dietitians pictured are neuroaffirming and totally non-judgemental and honestly just the best (if we do say so ourselves)

PHEW thatโ€™s just some of the amazing ways that a Paediatric Dietitian can support you and your child to achieve their โœจbest life โœจ So, hands up if you know what a Paediatric Dietitian does?

โœจ MASTERCLASS TIME โœจ This one is for all the SLPs working in community settings with paediatric dysphagia. This area of clinical practice can feel scary & overwhelming for many, even though itโ€™s part of our core business. Do you feel trepidation at the mention of thickener weaning, videofluroscopy, or the phrase โ€˜nil by mouthโ€™? Do you know what to recommend for oral hygiene? Or how to measure dysphagia without instrumental assessments? Worry no more, darling SLPs, as Holly Tickner & Dr Katherine Sanchez are here to teach you all you need to know to be the confident and capable clinician that you are!

A four-part series, you can sign up for the whole lot (and get the fourth seminar included for free!) or choose your own adventure and come along to the classes that youโ€™re most interested in. These masterclasses are small, live and a chance to really deep dive into the practical how-to of paediatric dysphagia management. Recordings will be made available for those who canโ€™t attend live on the day.

We are REALLY excited about this series and hope you are too! Comment EXCITED below and weโ€™ll send you the link to learn more!

Swallowing tablets and pills can be a really tricky skill to master for many kids (and adults!) ๐Ÿ’Š ๐Ÿฅฒ In celebration of Swallowing Awareness Day, weโ€™ve got you covered with a comprehensive 21-page e-book to help your child have success with swallowing medications. Tips, tricks, practice charts and more, because everyone learns a little differently!

Imagine how much easier (and cheaper!) life will be once youโ€™re not having to convince your kid to drink down mouthfuls of foul-tasting liquid medication anymore. It might mean your child can start on a new medication that they need, but havenโ€™t been able to take because itโ€™s not available in liquid form. Tablet swallowing is a handy life-skill to master whether you need it today or in a few years time.

And because itโ€™s Swallowing Awareness Day, weโ€™ve taken 25% off the price to celebrate! (For a limited time only) ๐Ÿ’• Want the link to take advantage of this discount? Comment PILL below and weโ€™ll shoot the link straight to your DMs.

Did you know itโ€™s โœจ Rare Disease Day โœจ today? Here at Next Bite, we are so fortunate to work with and be a part of the lives of many kids with very rare diseases. We say fortunate, because these kids are some of the toughest, bravest, hardest working and most resilient little people youโ€™ll ever meet. And wait til you meet their parents! Absolutely impressive from top to toe.

Because of the nature of rare diseases, itโ€™s often an isolating situation to be in for the child and family. The future can feel uncertain, or at times frightening, and so the time of childhood becomes a precious thing. We do not take for granted that we get to be a part of this special time in their lives, as part of their therapy team.

If you know someone with a rare disease (thereโ€™s many many more than what is listed here) or are caring for someone with a rare disease, we see you and all the hard work, effort and advocacy that is asked of you every day.

Want to learn more about rare diseases? We love:
