Scar Myths:

“Scars are all the same”

Anyone who has more than one scar knows this just isn’t true - we can all have different types of scar even on the same body!

And if they’re not the same, then the treatment shouldn’t be the same.

Scars can be raised, flat or indented. They can be white, red or brown. Some itch and are painful.

Keloid scars are treated very differently to indented scars, which are treated differently to acne scars.

All of these scars can respond to laser, surgery and scar therapy - but the laser settings, surgical techniques and treatment duration are different.

We are all unique and so are our scars.

Thank you AHTA!

Scar Clinic Perth Surgeons Dr. Anna Goodwin-Walters | FRACS(PLAST) and Dr. Helen Douglas FRACS(PLAST) were invited to speak this weekend at the Annual Hand Therapy Conference run by the AHTA Australian Hand Therapy Association.

Western Australia hosted the event this year in Perth and Dr. Anna and Dr. Helen were lecturing on laser and surgery for scars in adults and children.

It was great to meet so many enthusiastic and experienced hand therapists and discuss scar therapy and treatments as a multi-disciplinary group.

And what a great presenters gift :) thank you!

ACNE SCAR JOURNEY

These images show our 30-year-old patient before and after each of her three resurfacing laser treatments spaced 3-6 months apart.
The final photo is 15 months post her third laser.

Each treatment has built upon the last; sequentially making the scars less obvious whilst minimising downtime and risks of pigmentation change.

Whilst the scars have not disappeared, they are permanently smoother and less visible due to the reduced contour abnormalities on the skin surface after laser treatments.

She had 5 days of downtime with each treatment, being completely healed and able to wear make-up at day 6 post-procedure.

These photographs are of an actual patient treated at The Scar Clinic Perth by Dr. Helen Douglas and has given her permission for use of these images for education and marketing.

Due to AHPRA regulations, comments have been turned off as any positive comments could be interpreted as testimonials. Thanks for your understanding.

SCAR MYTHS:

“Plastic surgeons can erase scars”

Unfortunately, this just isn’t true.

At The Scar Clinic Perth all of our doctors are specialist plastic surgeons - and we will all tell you that there is no way to completely erase a scar.

There are however many ways of improving a scar and making it far less visible and problematic.

CO2 laser, surgery and scar therapy can be employed as a combination of scar improvement techniques to make them softer, flatter and less obvious.

SCAR MYTHS!

“Scar treatment is just cosmetic”

Firstly, it is worth saying that cosmetic scar concerns are VALID concerns.
Scars can be a painful reminder of trauma and can significantly affect a person’s mental and overall health.

When seeking information on scar improvement people need support, not implications that they are vain.

However, scars often come with functional or symptomatic concerns as well - they can be itchy, tight, painful or restrict movement.

At The Scar Clinic Perth we offer multi-modal scar assessment and treatment; including scar therapy, laser and surgery, which can improve all aspects of scar concerns.

If you have any concerns about your scar - cosmetic, symptomatic or functional; then get in touch with us via:

CHEST KELOID SCAR

These images show our 28-year-old patient before and 2 months after two multi-modal scar treatments including consultations, scar and steroid therapy to the multiple raised, itchy keloid scars on his central chest which have previously been resistant to treatment.

The scars are now much flatter and less itchy and the colour will continue to improve.

These photographs are of an actual patient treated at The Scar Clinic Perth by Dr Suzanne Rea who has given his permission for use of these images for education and marketing.

Due to AHPRA regulations, comments have been turned off as any positive comments could be interpreted as testimonials. Thanks for your understanding.
