It has been acknowledged by leading experts in the field of trauma that talk therapy isn’t enough by itself. Shifting our focus to include both body and mind is crucial in the journey of trauma healing. Within creative arts therapies sessions, including rhythmic activities and dramatic arts are just some ways we can work with the body.

The creative arts or expressive arts have a unique and significant role in restoring a sense of joy, vitality, and aliveness within us. When trauma is part of the picture, often our sense of feeling alive is numbed or hard to access. This is not something which can be talked into us, it must be felt and experienced through our bodies and minds on a somatosensory level.

There is a term mental health professionals refer to as post-traumatic growth (PTG). This is the ability for people who have survived traumatic events to then see elements of positive growth within their lives.
By drawing awareness to this, I don’t believe one has to go through traumatic events to grow, or that people who have had these experiences must see good in them. I have awareness of the difficulties; and I hold reverence to the capacity and beauty of the human spirit, that given these hardships treasures can be found by bravely bearing witness to traumatised parts within us.

It is common for trauma to be associated with extreme events such as war or natural disasters, however the vast majority of trauma occurs within families, communities, and schools.
Trauma occurs when our ability to respond to a perceived threat is paired with overwhelm and isolation. It is not an event, it is what happens within our bodies during and after an event. Its imprint is living inside us – within mind, brain, and body.

Not only can we work with images and art materials within a creative arts therapy session, objects can also be used.
These can come in the form of natural found objects (such as stones, shells, wood), small ceramic objects, textiles, photographs, and amulets to name a few. We can begin a process of finding, relating to, and using the object in different ways. Perhaps your imagination becomes activated, a part of yourself emerges, a story unfolds, or you are taken back to a point in time, or towards a memory. Maybe a feeling comes up in connection, or you notice a sensation arise within your body.
A space is held in these moments of meeting to see what emerges and sit with and witness just that. Objects can be a helpful starting point. They hold the potential of creating a bridge for experience to be explored outside the realm of our thinking or cognitive parts.

In arts therapy sessions images can act as a prompt, helping us access or explore parts of ourselves, a feeling, thought, experience, or memory. At times these states may not have been as easily accessible before hand, or even lack words to succinctly capture its essence.
Using images is one way (among many) we can explore the self and psyche in creative arts therapy work.
