Perth Kids Physio is turning 3 🎉

I decided to start Perth Kids Physio while working in another part time role 3 years ago today. At the time I wanted to start increasing my work hours but I also wanted more flexibility after having my first child.

Along the way, Perth Kids Physio has grown into something I’m so proud of. We welcomed the wonderful Aisling to the team, settled into a beautiful clinic space, launched our Tiny Moves program, and, most importantly, had the privilege of working with so many amazing kids and their families.

Fast forward 3 years and I have now resigned from my other job and am all in on Perth Kids Physio ☺️ Running a business definitely has its ups and downs, but I truly LOVE what I do.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey so far 💛 I’m looking forward to many years to come!

⭐️ Get to know our Physiotherapist Aisling ⭐️

Aisling has been working at Perth Kids Physio for just under 2 years. She is an amazing part of the PKP team who is always smiling and is loved by every child she sees!

We asked her a few questions so we could find out a bit more about her and what she loves about being a paediatric physio.

To learn more or book an appointment with Aisling, visit our website via the link in our bio or call us on 0438 705 218.

👶🏼 Torticollis is a common condition seen in babies and is characterised by a restriction in movement of the neck.

👶🏼 Torticollis can be present at birth or develop overtime with prolonged positioning

👶🏼 If torticollis is not treated it can lead to flattening of the head (plagiocephaly), as the restriction of the movement of the neck creates prolonged pressure to one area of the skull.

PREVENTION & TREATMENT
The prevention and treatment of torticollis is similar to that of plagiocephaly, with some added stretches.

✔️ Stretches: Gently stretching your baby’s head in the opposite direction either when they are on the floor or when you are carrying them

✔️Carrying: Vary your carrying position. Make sure you carry your baby on both the left and right side.

✔️Play: When your baby is awake and on their back encourage them to look towards the restricted side

✔️Tummy time: Place your baby on their tummy frequently when awake throughout the day. Encourage them to look left and right.

✔️Feeding: Whether your baby is breast or bottle fed make sure you feed them on the left and right side

✔️Sleep: Place your baby on their back to sleep however, alternate which end of the bassinet you place their head.

🔴 IMPORTANT NOTE 🔴

It is important to follow the SIDS guidelines when placing your baby down to sleep. Your baby should always be placed on their back and pillows should NOT be used to try and correct the shape of your baby’s head.

👶🏼 If you are concerned about the movement of your baby’s neck I would always recommend a physiotherapy assessment and treatment session so that more detailed and specific information can be provided to you to help guide you through the exercises/activities mentioned above.

Strengthening your baby’s neck is an important milestone in their overall development. Strong neck muscles support proper head control, which is essential for things such as feeding, visual tracking and reaching developmental milestones like rolling sitting, crawling, and eventually walking.

Everytime you pick you your newborn up from the floor, the change table, or their bassinet it is an opportunity to strengthen their neck muscles by using this side pick up position.

In the early days you can use your fingers to help support the neck and prevent your baby’s head lagging. Gradually, as they gain strength, you can reduce this support, ensuring you move slowly to allow them time to engage their muscles and hold their head up independently.

Do you notice that your baby is always turning their head one way?

Head turning preference is relatively common and can be corrected with guidance from a physiotherapist to support gentle stretches and activities as well as provide positioning advice ☺️

Some signs of a head turning preference include:
👶🏼Head always rotated to one side
👶🏼Difficulty turning the other way or following objects from one side to the other
👶🏼Feeding difficulties or a strong side preference
👶🏼Flat spot developing on one side
👶🏼Sleeping with their head the same way every time

If you are concerned reach out for an assessment 💕
