💧 Why do I need a full bladder for my ultrasound?

For some ultrasound examinations, a full bladder helps us obtain clearer and more accurate images.

🩺 Renal / Kidney Ultrasound
A full bladder allows us to properly assess the bladder before and after emptying, and can also help with visualising parts of the urinary tract.

Pelvic Ultrasound
A full bladder acts as an “acoustic window”, helping move bowel and bowel gas out of the way so we can see the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic structures more clearly.

Pregnancy Ultrasound
During early pregnancy scans, a full bladder can help lift the uterus higher in the pelvis and improve our view of the pregnancy, particularly when scanning through the abdomen. It also allows us to view and measure the cervix.

If you’ve been asked to attend with a full bladder, try to follow the preparation instructions provided when making your appointment.

It's Adenomyosis Awareness Month - a condition that affects so many but is still widely misunderstood.

Adenomyosis happens when tissue from the lining of the uterus grows into the uterus wall — causing severe pain, heavy periods, and debilitating symptoms. It can occur alongside endometriosis or on its own.
