Day 2 of the Push-Up Challenge, and this is me kicking off Day 2 with 10 pushups at 5.30 this morning at the start of my bike ride.

Did you know that the rate of diagnosed depression is greater in females than males, but the su***de rate for males is much higher than for females.

We know that men are less likely to seek help for declining mental health. We also know that early intervention results in much improved outcomes.

This is one of the reasons why I am a ride leader and committee member with Knights of Suburbia, a cycling community that is strongly focused towards improving physical and mental health through cycling, coffee and connection.

The Push-Up Challenge creates an opportunity for us to start important conversations about mental health - conversations that may prompt someone who needs support to ask for it.

Day 1 of the Push Up Challenge and I’m 100 pushups in, despite a head cold.

Between 3 and 26 June, I and a small but dedicated team will each be completing 3307 Push ups as part of the Push-Up Challenge. Every push up is in acknowledgment of a life lost to su***de in Australia last year. Please give generously to help change this alarming statistic. Thank you 🌻

This week, I had the great pleasure of being part of the TEDxPerth team bringing the ‘Ideas for Living’ Salon event to the stage hosted in beautiful Moana Hall.

This was my first TEDxPerth event as Head of Curation, and I had the great pleasure of working alongside Creative Director and TEDxPerth licensee Nathan Maddigan to bring this production together.

The amazing speakers Tara Kozah, Natalie McGrath, Michael Pignéguy and Cassie Power and James Norton were carefully selected for their contribution to the theme of Ideas for Living, hoping to offer alternative perspectives and ideas on how we approach life.

You may know that my son Ben Rainford and I have been attending TEDxPerth events together for many years, so it’s always been close to my heart.

You may be aware that sadly, 3307 people died by su***de in Australia in 2024. I’m personally committed and dedicated to helping to change this statistic. I’m raising funds to support organisations making a difference in this important area - providing support, education and programs to those in distress.

In June, I and a team of dedicated supporters will be taking part in The Push-Up Challenge, completing 3307 Push-Ups between 3 and 26 June (126 per day).

Interested in training in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) but can’t support in-house training? Are you a current MHFAider due for a refresher? I’d love you to join my next Mental Health First Aid program, which includes a self-paced e-learning program, followed by face to face (4 hours) training on the morning of 5 June in Victoria Park!

Feedback from participants have been exceptional, rating the content and delivery as 5/5, and said they now have the skills and confidence to recognise signs and symptoms and provide support to a person experiencing mental ill health.

Be a health(y) skeptic!

Here’s example of why understanding how to read food labels is important. The product on the left is 100 calories per 100g with 80% of those calories coming from sugar, despite the product being mostly cucumbers and vinegar (which contain very few calories).

The product on the right, manufactured by the same company has 17 calories per 100g of product and no added sugar. Calories from sugar for this product is 4%.
