Dr Kyla- Paediatric Dietitian

Dr Kyla- Paediatric Dietitian Dr Kyla Smith is a paediatric dietitian revolutionising the way we feed our families Food and mealtimes are overwhelming for so many families.

I’m here to help you feel good about mealtimes, and change the way we feed this generation of children. There’s the process of starting off on solid food, surviving the fussy toddler stages and navigating school lunchboxes and family mealtimes, all whilst battling a myriad of misinformation and our own learned and sometimes negative relationships with food. My mission is to empower you with the sk

ills and confidence to support your baby, your toddler and your school-aged child to love their food and feel comfortable in their bodies. We can raise our children to respect their bodies and trust their hunger, and feel confident around food. It’s not always easy in our diet-obsessed culture, but it is possible. My approach will set your kids up for a future of eating that supports them to grow and thrive. I can't wait for you to join me!

Imagine this: You’ve just placed dinner in front of your toddler only for them to calmly scream at the top of their lungs that they ‘don’t want this’. Followed by gentle screeching for ‘toastttttttt’.

This is not an uncommon scenario for toddler parents (which doesn’t make it any less frustrating).

So what should you do? Sit down and (try to) ignore them? Scramble around for some bread to toast? Or something else?

Let me answer these questions (and more) in my Tricky Dinners Masterclass -

Mealtime mental load is a real thing.

And most toddlers are having 2-3 snacks per day. That's 14-21 snacks per week.

Or 728-1092 snacks per year 🫠

If things are feeling repetitive I have the solution. Join Toddler Mealtimes and access my snack gallery with more than 100 ideas.

My gallery includes some tried and tested Mealtimes recipes, plus store bought options for convenience. Each idea also contains at least 2 food groups so you won't find a boring snack suggestions, like a single piece of fruit.

If you’re planning a first birthday celebration this post is for you 🎂

Firstly, congratulations on a year of parenting! Secondly, are you wondering about which cake is best for this celebration?

Some families choose a cake without added sugar because it feels right for them. That's completely fine. And some families choose a regular birthday cake that everyone at the party will enjoy together. I think that's fine too. And some people don’t even bother with a cake because their baby is more into punnets of blueberries. Great.

Your baby's first birthday is only one day. And I promise that a slice of birthday cake isn't going to determine their future eating habits, their health, or anything really that deep. Some babies might eat more of the cake than you expected, and others might not have even a single bite.

If making a separate cake for your baby feels fun and meaningful to you, go for it. But if you’re stressing about finding a recipe that everyone AND your baby will enjoy, just go with the easiest (or buy a cake if you don’t have time for that!)

Did you serve a regular cake, a no added sugar cake, or are you still deciding?

If you’re not sure what to say about bodies around your kids, that’s totally okay. Lots of us grew up surrounded by diet talk, body comments and “good/bad” language so we’re often still unlearning this but know we want something different for our kids.

The good news is you can still be unlearning things while supporting your child too.

The goal isn’t to do this perfectly all of the time. But our aim is to help our kids see that bodies aren’t the most interesting thing in the room. We can model that people are valued for who they are, not how they look. And if someone starts body talk in front of your child, you can absolutely change the subject.

If this is an area you’d like some support with, I’d love to invite you to join me with the Family Mealtimes membership. We’ve got a space dedicated to this topic and will be available to answer your questions in the private Facebook group.

What does a successful meal look like for your family?

In my household, a successful meal is where everyone can eat enough to be full.

Maybe my kids eat every part of the meal, BUT it’s more likely that they don’t. It’s still a successful meal even if they don’t eat any veggies. It’s still a successful meal if they opt for the grains over the protein food.

There is so much learning happening at shared mealtimes. When your kids are able to choose what they eat from what you serve, they’re more able to learn about those trickier foods on the table.

If you cook a meal that you want to eat, and include a safe food for your kids, then you’re crushing it

Remember, this is a long game. And your efforts are never wasted.

If your baby has eczema, you're definitely not alone - it affects up to 1 in 4 little ones! 👶

As parents, seeing those red, itchy patches on your baby's delicate skin can be really distressing. You want to help, but there's so much conflicting information out there about what causes eczema and how to manage it.

Here are the evidence-based basics every parent should know about baby eczema ⬆️

The good news? With the right approach, most childhood eczema can be well-managed. It's about understanding what works, what doesn't, and having a consistent routine.

This month in our Mealtimes membership, we're featuring an incredible 45-minute masterclass with eczema specialist Jemma Weidinger. She's a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner with 20 years of paediatric experience, and honestly, she's the most knowledgeable eczema expert I've ever met.

She covers everything from daily care routines to managing flare-ups, plus answers those burning questions like "Should my child avoid certain foods?" and "Which products are actually worth buying?"

If you're dealing with eczema in your family, this expert guidance could be a game-changer.

Whenever I see the tag I cringe a little bit 👀

The truth is there is no universal, fool-proof recipe that will guarantee your child gets stuck in or goes back for seconds. I WISH it was that easy, I really do.

From all of the years spent working with families I can assure you that every child has different needs and you can’t possibly account for them all with one recipe.

So please repeat after me… There is no single recipe that your child is guaranteed to eat.

To help prove how wildly kids preferences can differ, please share in the comments the food your child eats that shocks you the most. I’m talking olives, blue cheese, anchovies… You get the idea 👇👇

As a kid, I was a fussy eater but I adored sardines in tomato sauce. Go figure.

And if you’re feeling unsure what and how to cook for a fussy eater, head to https://mealtimes.com.au/ for more info about joining my membership.

There’s a lot that goes into feeding your family, before you even step into the kitchen to start cooking.

🧐 Deciding the menu for the week
🧐 Taking into account everyone’s preferences
🧐 Making sure you’re offering a variety of nutritious foods

It can be then quite disheartening to have kids not want to eat what you’ve served.

But before you throw it all in to serve up toast for dinner (not that there’s anything wrong with that) I want you to know that there is a different way.

My focus with my Mealtimes membership is to make feeding your family easier (not to add another thing to your plate). It’s designed to take away much of the day-to-day thinking so that you can focus on what’s really important: enjoying family meals.

Head to mealtimes.com.au to learn more about how the Mealtimes membership can help reduce your mental load.

Another yoghurt pouch, this time with added probiotics. It’s time to squeeze the truth out of it. Is it a good option, or are they just milking it?
