Feeling low can happen to anyone.

Stress, disappointment, grief and difficult seasons of life can all bring sadness.

Sadness is a normal emotional response that often comes in waves and may ease with time, support or positive changes in life.

Depression is usually more persistent and can affect far more than mood. It may impact motivation, sleep, appetite, concentration, energy, self worth, relationships and the ability to enjoy things that once felt meaningful. Sometimes there may not be one clear reason.

Many people dismiss what they are experiencing or wait until things feel severe before reaching out. But if low mood is affecting your life, it is valid to seek support.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists provide evidence based support for depression, low mood and emotional wellbeing.

Becoming a mother can bring joy, love and deep meaning, but it can also bring emotional challenges that are rarely spoken about openly.

Not all postnatal distress looks like sadness. It can also present as anxiety, irritability, rage, intrusive thoughts, numbness, overwhelm, guilt, or feeling disconnected from yourself or your baby.

Many mothers suffer in silence because they believe they should simply be coping. The reality is that maternal mental health struggles are common, treatable, and deserving of support.

On World Maternal Mental Health Day this week, we acknowledge the strength it takes to ask for help and the importance of compassionate, evidence based care for mothers at every stage of the journey.

“You seem fine.”

High functioning depression can be difficult to recognise because, on the surface, life may appear to be going well.

👉Many people continue to maintain work responsibilities, friendships, and daily routines, while privately struggling with low mood, exhaustion, or a persistent sense of heaviness.

In clinical psychology, this is sometimes referred to as masked depression. The outward functioning can make it harder for others, and sometimes even the individual themselves, to recognise that something deeper may be going on.

Depression does not always present as obvious sadness. It can also show up as constant fatigue, loss of enjoyment, irritability, or feeling emotionally flat, even while life continues to move forward.

Speaking with a clinical psychologist can help people better understand these experiences and begin working through them in a supportive and structured way.

One of the most common questions people ask before starting therapy is: How many sessions will I need?🗓️

The answer can vary widely depending on your concerns, your goals, and the therapeutic approach being used. Some people may experience meaningful change after a small number of sessions, while others benefit from longer term work with their psychologist.

Therapy is a collaborative process. Throughout treatment, you and your psychologist will regularly review your progress and adjust the approach where needed so that the work continues to support your goals.

For many people in Australia, therapy may also be accessed through a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). This referral is prepared by a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician and allows eligible patients to receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year.

If you’re considering therapy and would like to learn more about how the process works, appointments can be booked online via our website.
