Hope CEO Aida Aokdon explains the mission of Mercy Ships ⚓🌍 PART 2

Onboard Mercy Ships, a fully equipped hospital ship sailing to some of the world’s most underserved communities, life-changing medical services are provided completely free of charge. This includes:

• life-changing surgeries such as tumor removals, cleft lip and palate repairs, and orthopedic operations
• dental care and basic healthcare services for patients with little to no access to medical support
• training and education for local doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers to strengthen long-term medical capacity
• community health programs and outreach initiatives that bring care directly to remote villages and families

For many patients, this is their very first time seeing a doctor or receiving surgery. What may seem like simple medical treatment becomes something far greater — a moment of dignity, restored hope, and a second chance at life.

Through the voice of Hope CEO Aida Aokdon, this story reflects compassion in action, where volunteers from around the world unite in service to bring healing where it is needed most. It is a reminder that true impact is not only measured in treatment, but in the lives transformed and hope restored. 🌍

Hope Services Australia CEO AIDA AOKDON explains Mercy Ships — a powerful global humanitarian mission that is changing lives one medical service at a time ⚓🌍

Mercy Ships is an international charity hospital ship that travels to some of the world’s poorest countries, bringing free, life-saving medical care directly to people who cannot access or afford treatment. Instead of waiting for patients to come to hospitals, the hospital comes to the people through a fully equipped floating medical center staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, surgeons, and crew from around the world.

Hope Services Australia Pty Ltd t/a Hope Nursing Services has received an Honorable Mention for Social Enterprise Inclusion at the Women Changing the World Awards in Paris, selected from entries across 92 countries.

What is Social Enterprise Inclusion?
It means business that doesn’t leave people behind.

For us, it looks like this:
✅ We don’t stop when funding stops. When an NDIS plan ended, our nurses volunteered to keep their care going. Because dignity has no expiry date.

✅ Hope some profits fund FAHWA Charity (ACNC registered), chaired by our Founder Aida Oakdon. That means every shift our team works builds libraries in the Philippines, supports special needs kids, and delivers blessing bags to Perth’s homeless.

✅ Our staff choose purpose. They’re nurses, support workers, cleaners not just employees. They show up because “𝘓’𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘯’𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘴 𝘶𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘹. 𝘊’𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘳.” — 𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚. 𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙪𝙩𝙮.
