Today, on Vietnam Veterans Day, we pay respect to, and remember, those Australians who fought in the Vietnam War.
The bravery, tenacity and sacrifice of our people will never be forgotten.

Today we recognise the service of more than 60,000 Australians in the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1973. Additional RAAF personnel returned in 1975 to carry out evacuations and assist refuges in the lead-up to the South Vietnamese surrender.
Among the 60,000 Australians who served were 15,381 young men conscripted in the National Service Scheme. These young men were required to pause their civilian careers for mandatory training and then sent off to fight in Vietnam.
Of those who served, tragically 523 died and around 3,000 were evacuated with wounds, injuries, or illnesses. This service and sacrifice over Australia's 10 year involvement will never be forgotten.
Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated annually on the 18th of August, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. One of the most significant conflicts for Australians who served in the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam War was politically and socially decisive, and many veterans were not treated with the respect and honour they deserved upon returning home to Australia.
