Last night, we proudly celebrated our No One Dies Alone Companion (NODAC) volunteers at a special Sundowner for National Volunteer Week.

Our NODAC volunteers provide comfort, dignity and companionship to residents in their final hours, ensuring no one is alone at the end of life. Their compassion and generosity make an extraordinary difference to residents, families and our care teams.

This event was made possible thanks to the support of Volunteering WA and Lotterywest. The WA Government, through Lotterywest, supports community projects and events that strengthen connection and wellbeing across our community.

Thank you to every volunteer who gives their time so selflessly.

Our latest centenarian, Theresa Taborsky, says the secret to old age is easy.

“Stick to a healthy diet, “says this former cakemaker. “None of that fast food. And do a bit of exercise. Stretches every morning.”
Born into a farming family in what is now Croatia, Theresa came to Perth with her husband after the Second World War because “there was no snow here.”

They raised a family, and Theresa baked her way into catering success. She loves golf and the pokey machines so she spent her birthday with family and friends at the Crown Casino where her favourite cake, a Black Forest Torte, was especially prepared.

Act Deferral A Welcome Move for Older Australians

Amana Living has welcomed the federal government’s decision to defer the introduction of the new Aged Care Act from July to November, recognising the extra time as an opportunity to ensure the reforms deliver real and lasting benefits to older Australians.

Amana Living CEO, Stephanie Buckland, said the delay will provide much-needed time to refine critical elements of the reforms—particularly around home care —so that they work in practice for the people who matter most: those receiving care and those providing it.

“With the original implementation date fast approaching, the sector was still seeking clarity on key aspects of the reforms. This decision by Minister Sam Rae and the Albanese Government is a considered and constructive response,” Ms Buckland said.

“This pause gives us a chance to ensure the reforms are practical, sustainable and focused on improving outcomes for older people. Ultimately, it’s about getting it right, not rushing it through.”

Ms Buckland added that Amana Living, alongside the broader aged care sector, looks forward to working with government to help shape a system that supports choice, dignity and continuity of care.

“These reforms represent a vital step in strengthening aged care in Australia. With additional time, we can help ensure the system is robust, well understood and genuinely person-centred.”

The federal government has today announced that the new Aged Care Act will come into effect from 1 November 2025. This decision follows months of advocacy from Ageing Australia and our members that the reform was at risk by the rushed timeframe.

“We applaud the Government for listening to the concerns of the aged care sector and putting the needs of older Australians first,” Ageing Australia CEO Tom Symondson said.

“We fully support the new rights-based Aged Care Act, but the simple truth is we’re not ready to introduce all the sweeping reforms by 1 July. Providers have been working around the clock to ensure a smooth transition, but we just haven’t received all the information we need in order to proceed.”

Meet Sharon!

A family member of a resident at James Brown Care Centre who joined our Amana Living HBF Run for a Reason team this year.

She raised just over $1200. She ran the half marathon. Two incredible achievements!

Sharon shared with us why she decided to join the team.

"In my role as a Social Worker, I have the opportunity form connections with older Australians. I had the honour of being part of these people's life stories which I found meaningful and rewarding.

Through my own experiences I have many a time witnessed clients in hospice, hospitals and aged facilities face some of the most challenging or painful moments of their lives - essentially dying alone—without anyone, no family or any support system.

I believe my reason for running the HBF Half Marathon as part of the Amana Living No One Dies Alone team not only added extra meaning to my fitness goals but also presented me with a way to give back to my community. I was able to generate awareness by talking about the program and through fundraising to ensure Amana residents nearing the end of their life have someone by their side providing support and comfort."

Thank you Sharon for your support and fundraising.

Did you catch our HBF Run for a Reason team in their NODAC visors on Sunday morning?

We’re proud to share that 46 staff members from across Amana Living took part, along with an enthusiastic family member, which made it even more special.

Together, we’ve already raised over $18,000 for the No One Dies Alone Companion (NODAC) program — an incredible effort that reflects the spirit and generosity of our community.

We’re not quite finished yet — It’s not too late to donate! Every dollar helps us move closer to our $25,000 target. Can you help us get there?

As we celebrate Mother’s Day and all the mothers in our care, we honour 96-year-old, Dorothy De San Miguel, who has lived at Hale House (Coolbellup) for the last 15 years.

Dot, as she is known, is the proud mother of five children, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Dot’s daughter Estelle says her best memories of her mother are seeing her play football with other mothers at a school football picnic and sitting in a hot tub at Peron Station at night looking up at the stars.

Dot's motherly advice: “Get an education. That way, you can earn your own good money and always have independence and choices. Live good and productive lives and have some fun along the way. And don’t get old; it’s a pain in the a**.”

Happy Mother's Day.
