There’s always a trade off.

A dinner out might cost you a bit financially and your food might not be perfect, but if it builds connection with your partner, it can still be 100% worth it.

The problem is when we just keep making choices on autopilot without ever stopping to ask:

What did this cost me? What did I get from it? Was it worth it?

That little bit of reflection can make a massive difference to your energy, focus, training and relationships.

You don’t need to score 10/10 in every area of life.

You just need to notice when one area has been taking a hit for too long.

What were you doing 5 years ago?

This was me.

New daughter.
A lot more hair.
A scruffier beard.
And definitely less sharp personal branding 😂

COVID had just shut down a business I'd spent about 15 years building.

There was a lot of stress and a lot of uncertainty about what came next.

Since then...

I shaved the head.
Got contact lenses.
Did a heap more study in body work and training.

The gym I worked from burnt down.

I got back into personal training after spending years mainly focused on stretching.

I moved to Chris Wilson Fitness Studio , became trainer and recently manager there, and found myself loving coaching again.

These days I'm really focused on helping guys around my age with their training, health, mobility and mindset.

And that little girl is almost seven now ❤️

Funny how much can change in five years.

I started my fitness career teaching Body Pump and Body Combat while I was still working as an accountant.

Nothing excited me more than teaching those classes.
My goal was to become a Les Mills trainer, helping train new instructors and presenting the new releases.

I have never been the most naturally talented person. But I am very good at working hard, asking for feedback and always trying to get better.

It took five years, countless filmed classes and an audition across WA where only one trainer was selected.
Eventually, I got the role.

I travelled around Australia training hundreds of Body Combat instructors and continued doing it for the next ten years.

After retiring from Les Mills many years later, I was invited back to present Body Combat 100.

Looking at the footage now, I was definitely underweight, had barely been training with weights and had a little more hair too.

These days I am proud to have built myself back up and to bring that same commitment to Chris Wilson Fitness Studio Studio in Applecross, as manager, trainer and group class instructor, while continuing to help my clients with mobility and mindset.

My roles have changed over the years.

The commitment to keep learning, teaching and helping people has not.

This is pretty much my baseline diet.

Nothing extreme. I do not meticulously count calories.

I just keep an eye on whether my weight is going up, down or staying about the same.

Right now my goal is to maintain or slowly gain a bit of muscle, so I tend to eat slightly more on the fuller side.
The main things I try to do are:

• Eat food I actually enjoy
• Plan a few meals ahead
• Keep protein high
• Keep training simple and effective
If I wanted to lose some body fat, I would not completely change what I eat.

I would just reduce the portions a bit, finish meals slightly more on the hungry side and use a few lower calorie swaps.

AG Online Transformation Coach has some really good ideas for those.

For me, the biggest thing is finding food you enjoy, that digests well, and then eating an amount that matches your goal.

You don’t need more discipline. You just need to hook a healthy habit to something that gives you an instant reward.

Behavioural scientist Katy Milkman calls this temptation bundling. Her research found people exercised more when they could only listen to a really good audiobook while they were at the gym.

The reason it works is that most healthy habits reward you later.

Exercise today. Feel fitter weeks from now.
Stretch now. Be more flexible in 6 months.

So give yourself something you enjoy now as well.

Workout and your favourite podcast.
Walk and an audiobook.
Mobility and a good coffee.

Try it this week and see how it goes.

If you don’t understand this psychology concept, you’ll always struggle to achieve big goals.

It applies to fitness, work, business, relationships and pretty much anything that requires change.

The key lesson:

The valley of despair lasts longer than most people expect.

That frustrating stage where you’re doing the work, but the results haven’t really shown up yet.

That’s where most people quit.

But it’s also usually the stage right before things start to shift.

So if you’re doing the right things right now, keep going.

You will get there.

And if you’re not sure you’re on the right path, or you keep dropping off when it gets hard, get a coach.

Sometimes you don’t need more motivation or information

You just need direction and accountability

I regret number 3 instantly

Before you get into bed with me (metaphorically) and buy Diamond Dogs, you should probably know me a little better.

I’ve invited 5 men into the foundation round.

Men I thought were right for it.

Mid 40s.
Working too much.
Sacrificing their health for too long.
Ready to do something about it.

They’re signed up instantly as they know me. One even said how weird the timing was for him.

Needing some clarity and direction in his life right now.

The manuals are on the way.

And there’s a gift coming too.

There are 5 foundation memberships available.

Then I’m closing this intake so I can get everyone through it properly, refine the program, and make sure every man gets incredible results. Once they sell it will be months before it's open again.

You’ll be able to sign up later.

But the price will go up.

So before you decide, here’s your first date with Dave:

1) What movie did you watch way too many times as a kid?

2) What was the first car you really wanted?

3) What’s one thing from the 90s you wish still existed?

4) What did you collect as a kid?

5) What was your dream job before life got sensible?

6) What was the first concert you went to?

7) Where did you go on your first date with your current partner?

Comment below any of your answers

To get the foundation membership link, sign up to my 14 habits in 14 days for over 40s list now.

This is the bit I find the hardest.

Putting it out there.

I’ve worked my butt off creating something I genuinely believe is going to help a lot of men.

And then the old thoughts kick in..

“What if no one is interested?”

“What if people criticise it?”

And that is exactly the sort of pattern I am trying to change in myself.

Not letting the old habit make the decision.

Not taking action because it's more comfortable.

And that is what Diamond Dogs is about.

Noticing the patterns that keep you stuck, tired, frustrated, disconnected or spread thin, then building the structure and accountability to actually change them for good.

I’ve got 5 of my clients starting it this week already.

I’ve bought them a gift to thank them for being the first men to jump on board.

I genuinely believe this program is going to change lives for men in their mid 40s.

So if you are in your mid 40s and you feel stuck, tired, spread thin, or like something needs to shift right now, jump on my 14 day habit email list.

Link is in my bio.

I’ll be emailing the foundation membership access before the price goes up.

I've worked with clients for over 20 years.

Seen so many men put everything into their work at the cost of their health, relationships and energy.

I was guilty of it too, and honestly sometimes still am.

I've made 14 habits I've used that make a massive impact to start getting back your physical and mental health.

Restore connection where it's been lost.

And give you some more calmness and focus.

Follow the link in my bio or DM me "habits"

I'll send you you a new habit every day for 14 days.
