Wheelchairs for Kids Australia

Wheelchairs for Kids Australia We're committed to transforming the lives of children through the gift of mobility. Over 67,000 wheelchairs donated worldwide since 1998.

Powered by a volunteer workforce, we make adjustable, all-terrain wheelchairs for children in developing countries. Wheelchairs For Kids Australia is a Perth-based charity transforming the lives of mobility-impaired children in disadvantaged communities worldwide. Since 1996, it has produced and donated over 62,000 all-terrain wheelchairs to children in more than 80 countries—giving them dignity,

independence and opportunity. More than 250 dedicated retirees craft the wheelchairs to WHO Standards, ensuring safety and comfort. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, co-founder and volunteer factory manager Brother Thomas Oliver 'Olly' Pickett AM was named 2025 Senior Australian of the Year. Visit their stand to discover how you can support this life-changing work, helping children move, play, and thrive. Wheelchairs For Kids Australia was founded by Rotary Club of Scarborough, Western Australia, District 9423 and continues to enjoy the support of Scarborough along with many other Rotary Clubs and Rotarians Australia-wide. During their recent wheelchair mission to South Sumatra, Global Village Foundation. Bali were able to make a dream come true for two young women who have spent life laying down.

Nurah is 19 years old and her sister Eka is 23. They live in Lampung with their devoted parents. Sadly they have never had a wheelchair. While our wheelchairs are not designed for adults, we can often find they can be adapted for smaller frames like the sisters.

Both girls were born healthy, with no early signs of disability. However, after several months, their parents began noticing the same developmental challenges in each of them. Despite the difficulties they have faced throughout their lives, the love and dedication of their parents has been extraordinary.

For many years, Nurah and Eka have spent much of their lives lying on the floor, yet both young women remain physically strong and healthy — a true reflection of the incredible care, patience and unconditional love they have received every single day from their family.

In early May, everything changed. With the gift of their very first wheelchairs, Nurah and Eka can now experience a new sense of freedom, dignity, and connection with the world around them.

For the first time ever, this beautiful family will be able to go out together, visit relatives and friends and share life’s simple moments side by side as a complete family unit.

It was a joyful and happy day for the women, their parents and the team from Global Village Foundation.

No matter the age, getting mobility matters and makes the future so much brighter 🌞

Exciting to share two new children receiving their wheelchairs in Salé is a city in northwestern Morocco via Red Goes Faster.

First is 10-year-old Adam who lives in Salé with severe physical disability. His younger brother has the same condition but can still sit comfortably in a pushchair. For Adam this is no longer possible. He had never had a wheelchair that allowed him to sit upright and comfortably. With some extra cushioning, posutral supports and a headrest, his Wheelchairs For Kids Australia wheelchair is a great fit. Adam look pretty happy with the result :)

Next is Mohamed Amir, a bright four-year-old who was born with spina bifida. He came from a town near Casablanca to Salé to receive his new wheelchair.

Eager to help, Mohamed Amir kept stealing the fitter's tools 😄 When his wheelchair was finally assembled, Mohamed Amir and his parents were very happy. Having a wheelchair will make it possible for him to go to kindergarten next year and onto school in no time

Near and far, our wheelchairs travel 1000's of km every year to bring the joy and hope of mobility to children in need 💛

We're catching up with some amazing humans who have been delivering rugs, toys and services to volunteers over the past two weeks.

So many stunning rugs and knitted toys coming we have trouble keeping up with photos and names! Sue and Lyn are just two of the lovely volunteers who sort through more than 15,000 donated items every year!

Special thanks to the lovely delivery ladies and men who bring in rugs for friends and community groups.

Jill travelled all the way from Brisbane with a suitcase full of rugs and Clare dropped off boxes from the Margaret River Craft Group.

Rhonda dropped off a delivery from the Narembeen Autumn Club and went home with collection boxes for local businesses! She was signed up as a collector in our donation box program!

And just yesterday we caught up with the lovely Kay who is now 87 years old. She has slowed down but still loves to crochet rugs - she's been donating since 2006 and estimates she's completed at least 120 rugs in her spare time!

And to the lovely ladies at Juniper Hilltop in Bentley who are regular rug donors. Thanks to volunteer Einar who popped over to collect them.

In early May Nam Vuong, Pharmacy Manager from TerryWhite Chemmart Kingsley come in over four days and provide 50 free vaccinations for flu, shingles, covid and RSV to volunteers. Nam has fond memories of WFKA having volunteered during his time as a student at Chisolm College. Great work thanks Nam🙏

And lastly but not leastly, on Monday we welcomed Glen from St John's Ambulance First Aid who have very kindly donated a new Defibrillator. Much appreciated. 🙏

If we missed you or didn't a get a photo, please know we are very grateful to every donor and can't thank the community enough for your support, always. 💛 💛 💛

post ... we are catching up on some very important thank you's over the next few days, starting off with an incredible local fundraiser that climbed to dizzying heights over 24 hours!

Shree Kutchi Leva Patel Community (Western Australia) Youth Wing joined with Shree Swaminarayan Temple (Mandir) Perth Australia for a lapathon on Sunday 19th April.

Over the morning hundreds of community members came to walk, run, jog and push each other in our wheelchairs around an oval at the temple.

⭐️By Monday night, a whopping $25,100 had been raised or enough to fund 84 wheelchairs! ⭐️

A big thank you to Jay from SKLPC and everyone involved in this amazing day. Your generously will bring so much joy and mobility to children and their families for years to come. 💛

Special thanks to our volunteers Mike and Lindsay for taking our trailer of wheelchairs out to this event.

Jay Shree Swaminarayan 🙏

It was exciting for our team to meeting Marco Kerkhof Founder of Blu Spring Associazione on Friday. Blu Spring is one of our amazing international distribution partners. Marco and his lead physiotherapist Jules are based in Switzerland but work with children and adults who have disabilities in Zambia.

Since 2018, Marco and his team, along with their local partners Pamodzi Ndi Ana, HANDS AROUND THE WORLD and many volunteers have delivered more 2400 wheelchairs, the majority from Wheelchairs For Kids Australia.

Just last year their wheelchair and maintenance missions took them across 10,000km from the top to the bottom of Zambia!

We loved hearing about the inspiring work Marco is doing and seeing this collage video he has made from recent trips.

We hope you enjoy it too.

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. Held each May, it recognises the millions of Australians who generously give their time, skills and experience to support communities across the country.

Meet Rita Macintyre another one of incredible volunteers helping power Wheelchairs For Kids Australia. 💙

Rita has been volunteering on and off since 2010, but now she is fully retired is a regular on our factory floor.

Over the last 12 months, Rita has created a “sewing corner” where she has recruited teams of ladies to come in sew all the colour covers that go on our wheelchair components.

📹Watch Rita’s video and see why she is so passionate about supporting Wheelchairs For Kids Australia.

Day 3 Wednesday 20th May ...

Our Wednesday team were joined by Anne Aly Member for Cowan
and Minister for Small Business, International Development and Multicultural Affairs.

Dr Aly has been a long time friend and advocate for Wheelchairs For Kids Australia. She gave a very touching tribute to our volunteers which included a story of her experience of being in Jordon last year in a refuge camp and seeing a container of wheelchairs from us awaiting dispatch to children in need.

She said it would stay with her forever and she felt very proud and moved to see a charity with in electorate, making such a difference to lives overseas.

Each day this week we have a special morning tea for our volunteers, kindly sponsored by grant funding from Lotterywest and Volunteering WA, along with a small gift of appreciation for every volunteer.

Make sure you check back each morning for photos and each evening for a special video showcasing some of the volunteers who make Wheelchairs For Kids Australia possible.
