☀️ Vitamin D in Winter – Are You Getting Enough?
As the weather cools down in Perth and we spend more time indoors, it can become more difficult to maintain healthy vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D is often referred to as the "sunshine vitamin" because our bodies produce it when our skin is exposed to sunlight. During winter, shorter days, increased cloud cover, and more clothing can reduce vitamin D production.
Why is vitamin D important?
✔️ Supports strong bones and teeth
✔️ Helps the body absorb calcium
✔️ Supports immune function
✔️ Plays a role in muscle strength and function
✔️ Important for overall health and wellbeing
Some people may be at a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency, including:
• Older adults
• People who spend most of their time indoors
• Individuals with darker skin tones
• People who cover most of their skin when outdoors
• Those with certain medical conditions affecting absorption
While some vitamin D can be obtained from foods such as oily fish, eggs, and fortified products, it is often difficult to meet requirements through diet alone.
For some people, a vitamin D supplement during winter may be beneficial. However, supplementation needs vary between individuals, and excessive supplementation is not recommended.
