Hi 👋🏻 Welcome to episode 1 of “Is this a medieval torture device OR a piece of gym equipment?”

When you look around, it would be easy to assume the former but they are in fact all pieces of gym equipment, which if used correctly, can actually be tortuous BUT IN A GOOD WAY!

I’ve had a heap of members say they’ve never seen, let alone used some of the pieces in the newly relaunched Zoo Fit Clarkson so I do whatever I can to help them try them out and get comfortable using them.

I’ve put together a little vid of some of my amazing clients who took one for all of you and tried out some of newbies on the gym floor. A special big thanks to Tara who not only braved the pendulum squat but the assisted Nordic curl as well 🙌🏻🤭

Give them a go and let me know how you like them and if there’s anything you’d like me to show you, comment or tell me in the gym!!!

No matter what you are working on, or working toward, slow down to reflect where you are in life at this very point in time. Finding peace and joy in the present moment is just as important as the path ahead and the goals you have, but is usually overlooked in our drive for what’s ahead of us!

Sometimes we get too caught up in what we don’t have, where we aren’t in life (and think we should be) and the weight of our own and others expectations feel so heavy that we can’t appreciate what we already have.

Our lives are so busy; society prides itself on relentless hustle and drive, we all have so much going on that it’s too easy to caught up in the mindset of always busy, always doing and always pushing for more.

Reflecting on this post reminded me of a poem I used to love, Desiderata. Written in 1927 and just as relevant today, if not more so with the changing world. The line that resonates with me and this post, is the opening line “ go placidly among the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence”.

Sometimes just getting out of your daily surrounds and away from all the noise, is enough to help clear the mind, reset the emotions, feel calm and allow you to practice gratitude for what you already have in life.

There will always be another goal, another challenge, another thing to do, another life stress, another call to make, bill to pay and teenage crisis to sort out BUT for a short period of time when I’m hiking, I’m just living in the moment. On a hill climb the only thing you can think about is getting up the hill, but there’s nothing better to ground myself and anchor myself in the moment than this and stop to enjoy the view.

I take this time to reflect on all that I’m grateful for and all the things in my life that make me happy- and in the rush of everyday life, it’s easy to miss all these things.

Slow down! You’ll be surprised at what you can see when you look around.

Hey you! Yes you! 👋🏻

I’ve got a message for you if you’ve been thinking about joining a gym…

I see you, and you belong right here!

I know it can be a bit intimidating if you’re deciding to take the step. Especially a bigger gym like the one I coach from in Clarkson.

It’s easy to think gyms are full of only young and already super fit members and then tell yourself you don’t belong and won’t fit in, already talking yourself out of it before even trying.

I’m here to tell you other wise! When I look around my gym I see people of all ages, all shapes, all sizes, all fitness levels and all with different goals and motivations!

It’s a place where every single member comes to work on themselves and for the hour or so that they’re there, to focus on their health and fitness goals.

Some spend more time than that, others less, some lift all the weights, others only use the treadmill, some have cute matching sets and others wear trackies and a t-shirt, some roll directly out of bed and others have their hair and make up done, some put their headphones on and for the time they’re there, are in their own world and others do more talking than training, because for them the connection and conversation is the best part of their day.

Whatever member it is, they are just as valued and important than the other AND they are ALL part of our amazing gym.

Whatever your reason for wanting to join the gym, I see you and you belong here!

For your heath, fitness, movement and mobility, bone strength, muscle growth, weight loss, mental health, longevity- it’s simply the best place to invest in yourself and achieve any of these goals.

Regardless of your age, your fitness, your gym experience, your weight, your wardrobe, I see you! You belong here and you will be made welcome by myself and the other PTs, the amazing members and the lovely girls on the front desk!

If you’re ready to join or get back into the gym after a break, now is the right time (especially as we are all learning how to use the new equipment together 🤭😂)

Another weekend, another hike- this one just a quick drive up the freeway to Yanchep 🥾☀️🎒

We tackled the Ghost House Trail, a 12km loop on relatively flat terrain which allowed us to have a faster pace for the walk.

The tracks here are well maintained, marked clearly and allow you to look around and enjoy the scenery while walking, more than some of the other hikes we do where you need to really keep an eye on where you’re walking.

So many amazing things to see- butterflies everywhere, the spring flowers blooming, the Ghost House, limestone caves and our native wildlife.

It’s the perfect time of year to get outdoors- not too dark or cold in the mornings and there’s a feeling of everything coming back to life after winter (myself included 😬)

It was a good month! 💕September 🥾🌅🙌🏻

🧜‍♀️👩🏻‍🦱 Top of the list, I discovered how to use my daughters mermaid curler. One forehead and one finger burn later and I’m getting better at it.

🏪 A gym closure for a refurbishment, working from a new gym and a lot of clients away meant I had no early sessions, less time working and a chance for some quieter days. I came back fresh to a whole new gym and I love it!

💔 Remembering that my mum is always with me. Every morning I wake up and say hello to her picture- it’s not getting easier to know I’ll never see her again, but an acceptance of missing her for the rest of my life is becoming the norm.

✈️ A getaway to Penang with my man for a glorious and wonderful week away from normal life where we ate, walked, explored and got to be with each other every day. My dad survived the week with my daughters. Or was it the other way around?

🍨 My absolute favourite food ever- ice cream. And this was an amazing combo of coffee tiramisu and pistachio matcha from a little shop in Georgetown. I’m not proud of how much I love ice cream but it’s who I am, and I’ve accepted it… 😬🤣

A fresh new pic to celebrate the fresh new gym 🏪

Loving the new space, the colours, the layout, the atmosphere and the all the equipment.

But the best bit is still the same- my clients, the members and the team I work with.

Walking in and seeing them makes my day, every day!

And every day I get to help people become the fittest, strongest and healthiest version of themselves. How lucky am I?

One day last week I cried for hours! 😭 Distraught & overcome by emotions, I was inconsolable with all of the above thoughts in my mind.

It’s normal to have worries & stress. On this morning though, every thought, feeling and fear came all at once- while some are based on genuine concerns, others are irrational and not my usual mindset. I know people deal with far worse, but in the midst of emotional overwhelm, everything seems massive.

I’m usually pretty even keeled in the mood department, but that day I wasn’t myself and didn’t know what was happening.

One day I was inconsolable with sadness. The next day- calmer. Such is the power of hormones.

I didn’t know whether to post this- I feel vulnerable doing so, but I’m sharing because I know I’m not the only woman in her 40s who sometimes feels crazy, doesn’t feel like herself anymore & is struggling with her emotions, sleep & energy. I know I’m not the only mum who questions the job she’s doing, the only human who is looking at the world with utter horror and helplessness or alone in experiencing life’s stresses.

For the last few months I’ve had a growing anxiety in my chest, a tightness and racing heart and shortness of breath- like I’m on the edge of a panic attack. Out of the blue and not brought on by thoughts. It happens randomly, sometimes all day. I thought it was just something happening in my body due to my hormones but in hindsight, maybe the last year has taken a toll & my fluctuating hormones have taken it to the next level.

I have felt like I’m going crazy! I know I’m not, but it’s hard to look from an objective perspective when you’re in the midst of little sleep and big feelings. We give teenagers a break due to their hormones running wild, maybe us perimenopausal women need a bit of a break too?

We definitely need to be kinder to ourselves & we also need to educate ourselves on the many symptoms at this age- physical AND mental due to our hormones. I’ve been learning about it to best help my clients (and myself) & it’s still knocking me on my a$s, even with knowledge!!!

I thought I was going crazy. I am not.
It’s perimenopause 😆
If you can relate, know you aren’t alone x

Why the smile? I slept through the whole night 🥳
And suddenly, my world seems like a brighter place 🤣

Like so many women in their 40s experience, my sleeping has been terrible for a little while and it’s had a major effect on everything in my life.

I’ve been snapping wide awake between 2-4 every morning. I struggle to go back to sleep and will often toss and turn while I inevitably count down the minutes to my alarm goes off.

In the mornings I have early clients, the wake ups set the scene for a crap start to the day. After lying awake and ruminating, I just don’t want to get up for work. I’ve never been like this, previously waking up between 4.15/ 5am most days of the week and loving getting clients done first thing in the morning.

On the mornings I don’t have work but plan for a walk or bike ride, the thought of waking up to exercise after not sleeping for hours is unfathomable. I actually can’t think of anything less I want to do. And then that sets the scene for a day where I think I should be more disciplined with my training and wake ups. It just dawned on me that I have a valid reason for the struggles and lack of motivation I’ve been experiencing. And it’s real!!!

Broken sleep and being tired often becomes our norm during perimenopause. It’s no wonder that sleep depravation is used as a torture method- it truly is tortuous 🤣

For me, ongoing disrupted and broken sleep led to minimal enthusiasm for most things in life especially getting up in the mornings, low energy, general low mood, feeling overwhelmed easily, not motivated to do much on social media for work and a lack of drive to exercise during the day. It’s also harder to eat consistently and have the energy to food prep, so it has felt like a no win situation lately.

So what changed last night? I don’t know exactly. My day was essentially the same as every other. The only change was that I recently added an extra pump of estrogel in the am and changed my progesterone to daily. Maybe it’s stable hormones for the win???? Which makes sense really! 😆

Let’s hope tonight it’s two in a row 🤞🏻🤞🏻
