Strong houses are built from the ground up. So are resilient bodies.

The foundation is rarely the first thing people notice.

Neither is fascia.

Neither is the nervous system.

Yet these hidden structures help support everything above them.

Bowen Therapy works from the understanding that the body is an interconnected whole, where unseen systems can influence how we move, adapt and respond to life.

It's been understood for more than a millennium that the body alternates between predominantly using the left and right nostrils to breathe -- in anywhere from 30 minute to 4 hour cycles. This wasn’t verified experimentally until the late 1800’s. At the time, no one really knew what it was for and offered multiple dubious explanations. What has since been learned is that the body does this to help regulate a number of bodily functions and processes. Air taken through the right nostril stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, increasing circulation, cortisol levels, blood pressure, heart rate, etc. Air taken through the left nostril stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering blood pressure, heart rate, cooling the body and reducing anxiety. And to answer the obvious question, yes -- selectively breathing through one nostril or the other CAN be used therapeutically.

This intricate network of human neurons is as visually captivating as it is scientifically significant.

Captured using super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, the image reveals the complex web of connections formed by axons and dendrites. Images like this help researchers study the nervous system and advance our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's.

Science has a remarkable way of revealing beauty alongside discovery. View more at https://www.sciencephoto.com.

The body is like a garden.

It doesn’t need to be forced to grow — it needs the right conditions.

Bowen Therapy offers gentle input and space for the body to respond in its own way.

Small signals. Quiet pauses. A chance to recalibrate.

The vagus nerve is attracting significant research interest.

A recent clinical trial investigated an implanted vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) device for people with severe treatment-resistant depression. The device was surgically implanted and delivered regular electrical pulses directly to the vagus nerve.

Researchers reported sustained benefits for many participants over a two-year period.

What makes the study interesting for Bowen practitioners is the growing scientific attention being given to this remarkable nerve.

The vagus nerve is one of the body's major communication pathways, linking the brain with organs throughout the chest and abdomen.

Many Bowen Therapists will be familiar with the vagus nerve procedure.
Its aim is not to override the body, but to work respectfully with it. Like all Bowen work, it reflects a philosophy of minimal input: subtle, precise, and followed by pause.

As research continues to explore the vagus nerve and its role within the nervous system, it's fascinating to see mainstream medicine investing so heavily in understanding a structure Bowen Therapists have long recognised as important.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is give your body a little less to do.

Wishing everyone a restful, restorative weekend. 💙

Connective. Epithelial. Muscle. Nervous.

Four tissue types, countless interactions.

One of the things we love about Bowen is that it encourages us to appreciate the body as a whole rather than focusing on individual parts.

Every session begins with the understanding that the human body is wonderfully interconnected, and endlessly fascinating.
