Your nervous system is constantly doing three things:

✨ Receiving input
✨ Processing information
✨ Generating response

Most of this happens automatically, without conscious awareness.

This is why pauses are included between moves — to allow time for observation of change and system response.

It’s less about what is done in a moment, and more about what your system does with it.

The cuboid bone of the foot is notorious for creating a loss of hip support when not moving properly. It tends to shut down the TFL muscle, resulting in a collapsing in at the knee and hip as well as a dropping of the arch.

Do you notice that your pants sit higher on one side? Try touching the base of your skull. Some of you will notice that things even out. Why? When problematic, the atlas often causes an unleveling of the hips via hip flexor spasm. Touching it can momentarily reverse this.

We address this nerve in Bowen Therapy 🌸

The sural nerve doesn't get a ton of attention, but it's actually one I have to work on pretty frequently. It's a sensory nerve arising from the common peroneal and tibial nerves. It provides sensation to the back of the calf, the achilles area, and the posterior portion of the lateral foot. I've seen sural nerve entrapment masquerading as achilles tendonitis and misdiagnosed as plantar fasciitis. The most common area of entrapment is just lateral to the achilles tendon. The nerve is pretty superficial and people often irritate it when rolling out the calves. In clinic, I use Active Release Techniques to address this. At home, self-massage to the tissues around the nerve would work better than stretching or rolling.

Some body parts are clearly remnants of our recent ancestors. Such is the case with the dorsoepitrochlearis. In apes, it's a powerful shoulder muscle, crucial for climbing and knuckle walking. In humans, it's rarely found anymore -- and if found, isn't typically very big. Though some estimates have it in as much as 5-20% of the population, there have been fewer than 30 published cases of it in the last 200 years. If found, it connects the latissimus dorsi muscle to the upper arm or elbow (it varies) and is usually innervated by the thoracodorsal nerve -- the same nerve that controls the latissimus dorsi.

3,000 touch receptors on the tip of a finger!

Now imagine training those fingertips to recognise subtle changes in muscle and connective tissue.

That's part of what Bowen students and practitioners spend years developing.

The Bowen move itself is gentle.

Knowing exactly where, when, and how to apply it is the skill.

What do you think surprises people most when they experience Bowen Therapy for the first time?

The nervous system is an intricate network — not a switch to be flipped, but a system to be respected.

Bowen Therapy takes a gentle, considered approach, offering light, precise moves followed by intentional pauses.

This creates space for the body to process information and reorganise itself naturally, as best it's able.

Sometimes, meaningful change can begin with doing less — not more.
