Ever seen what can grow inside an ear? 🍄👂
These are two cases of otomycosis — fungal infection of the ear canal — captured through our video otoscope.
📷 Image 1: White, fluffy fungal growth completely blocking the ear canal. This client came in with itching, discomfort, and a feeling of fullness.
📷 Image 2: A more advanced fungal and bacterial infection with distinctive black spores visible throughout the canal. These dark spores are a hallmark of Aspergillus niger, one of the most common fungi found in ear infections.
Fungal ear infections are more common than people realise, especially in warm, humid climates like Perth. They can be caused by moisture trapped in the ear canal, overuse of cotton buds, or prolonged use of ear drops or hearing aids. Symptoms often include persistent itching, discomfort, a blocked feeling, and sometimes dark or discoloured discharge.
We use micro-suction to carefully clear the fungal debris from the canal, then refer you back to your GP with a detailed clinical report and video otoscopy images so they can prescribe the right antifungal treatment. Clearing the canal first means the medication can actually reach where it needs to go.
If your ears are itchy, uncomfortable, or just don’t feel right — don’t ignore it. Call us and we can usually see you the same day.
