Have you ever wondered why the smallest inconvenience can feel manageable one day, but completely overwhelming the next?
Your ability to cope with stress isn't the same every day. That's because your nervous system responds to what's happening both around you and within you.
When you're within your window of tolerance, your nervous system is regulated. You're better able to think clearly, manage emotions, solve problems, and respond flexibly to life's challenges.
But stress, poor sleep, illness, trauma, or ongoing life pressures can narrow that window. When that happens, you may find yourself becoming anxious, reactive, or overwhelmed or shutting down, feeling numb, disconnected, or exhausted.
It's normal to move in and out of your window throughout the day. The goal isn't to stay regulated all the time; it's to recognise when you've left your window and understand what helps you return.
Becoming aware of your nervous system is one of the first steps towards responding to yourself with greater understanding and self-compassion.
Which do you notice more when you're stressed, becoming overwhelmed or shutting down?
