Auslan Emergency Interpreting (AEI) app

For the first time since Triple Zero was introduced in 1961, Deaf and hard of hearing people can contact emergency services in Auslan, in real time, anywhere in Australia.

AEI is a life-saving emergency communications service for Deaf and hard of hearing Australians.
Using the AEI App, you can:
- Make a video call in Auslan
- Connect to a qualified Auslan interpreter
- Have the interpreter call 000 for you
- Communicate clearly during emergencies - in Auslan

For more than 64 years, Deaf and hard of hearing people around Australia have not had equal access to emergency services. Existing services only provided Auslan support during business hours. The AEI App closes a 64 year gap in equal access to 000

Some of the lovely Team Saba crew attended our Acquired Brain Injury training.

Did you know we deliver training workshops which aim to develop the knowledge of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) for those working in the disability sector, particularly care providers looking to upskill their staff ?

During the training our qualified facilitator will teach effective techniques to better support and care for people living with brain injury.

Our TEAM SABA (nurses, support workers & music therapist) doing a specialised ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY course through At Home Care and Connect Case Management 🧠 Was awesome!! They all thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Thank you X X

NDIS Funding Periods: What are they, how do they work, and what are my rights?

The NDIS have introduced funding periods to limit the overspending of funds before the plan’s end date. This means funding is released in small increments rather than in full.

Home and Living supports, such as SIL, have monthly funding periods applied.
All other supports usually have 3 monthly funding periods applied.

The NDIA sets the length and amount of funding periods in line with NDIS laws, taking into account a participant’s individual needs and circumstances.
This includes things like:

> Preferences
> Risks with overspending
> Risks of harm, fraud, or financial exploitation.

Participants have the right to request their preferred funding periods. Discuss this with your NDIS team. Make sure they specify the preferred funding period schedule in their reports.

It may be appropriate for funds to be “frontloaded” into funding period 1 to take into more intensive work that needs to be completed at the beginning of the plan, such as when a support coordinator is helping you to implement your plan, or when an OT needs to complete an assessment.

If you receive a plan and you are not happy with the funding period schedule, you have the right to request a review under Section 100 of the NDIS act. Speak to your Support Coordinator, LAC, or contact the NDIS directly.

Feedback Friday!

We received some uplifting stakeholder feedback regarding a participant we support.

One of our Specialist Support Coordinators recently met with the participant and his family. Our SSC followed up with thoughtful ideas and a clear plan to help the participant move forward. His family shared that, for the first time in a long time, they feel he’s genuinely engaging and motivated to take positive steps. They expressed how grateful they are to have such a dedicated SSC on board.

This goes to show how effective good support coordination can be, and the positive impact it can have in the lives of participants and their support networks.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organisation specific. IWD is a movement, powered by the collective efforts of all.

Australia is ranked 24th for gender equality internationally. There is still work to be done.

January 26th is not a day of celebration for everyone - and it’s important we acknowledge that.

On 26 January 1788, Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet, raised the Union Flag at what is now Sydney Cove, signifying Britain’s formal claim to the land and the start of colonial settlement.

For First Nations peoples, this date marks the beginning of dispossession, violence, and the ongoing impacts of colonisation. It represents loss of land, culture, language, and lives; the impacts of which are still felt today through intergenerational trauma, systemic disadvantage, and inequity.

In 1938, January 26 was formally recognised as a Day of Mourning by the Australian Aborigines League and the Aborigines Progressive Association.

Listening to First Nations voices, sitting with discomfort, and recognising why this date is painful for many is part of moving forward together.
