⚽ Shaun continues to build an impressive career in elite football.

Having previously worked with the Northern Ireland UEFA Academy and Charlton Athletic Women’s Academy, Shaun has now added Perth Glory to his growing experience in the game.

In his role with Perth Glory, Shaun provides physiotherapy services to the Senior Women’s Academy at Perth Glory HQ, while also leading injury surveillance and monitoring across the program.

This work goes beyond treating injuries — using player data and injury trends to help guide decision-making, identify areas of risk and develop strategies to keep players healthy, available and performing at their best. 📊⚽

We’re loving seeing Shaun continue to combine high-performance physiotherapy with a data-driven approach to injury prevention and player care.

The team gained valuable clinical skills and levelled up on differential diagnosis around the wrist.

🏃‍♀️ CITY TO SURF: 5 FUELLING TIPS 🏃‍♂️

Whether you’re chasing a PB or just aiming to enjoy the finish line, good fuelling can make a huge difference.

1️⃣ CARBS ARE YOUR FRIEND 🍌
Carbohydrate is your primary fuel source when running hard. Don’t go low-carb in the days before race day — arrive with your glycogen stores topped up.

2️⃣ EAT BEFORE YOU RUN 🍞
Start the race fuelled, not hungry. Aim for a familiar, carbohydrate-rich breakfast 2–3 hours before the start. Race morning is NOT the time to try something new!

3️⃣ FUEL DURING THE RACE ⚡️
For a ~1–2 hour event, aim for around 30–60 g of carbohydrate per hour. Gels, sports drink, chews or other easily digested options can all work.

4️⃣ DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU’RE EMPTY ⏱️
Start fuelling early and take small, regular amounts rather than trying to catch up once fatigue hits. And practise your fuelling strategy in training — your gut needs training too!

5️⃣ HYDRATE, BUT DON’T OVERDO IT 💧
Arrive well hydrated and drink regularly according to your thirst, the weather and your individual needs. More fluid isn’t necessarily better.

👉 THE BIG TAKEAWAY: Fuel the work you’re asking your body to do.

And remember — there is no one-size-fits-all approach to race nutrition.

Your ideal strategy depends on your distance, pace, training load, sweat rate, GI tolerance and goals.

🏃‍♀️ Running your first City to Surf? Or chasing a PB?

You don’t need to train like an elite athlete to run like one.

The most successful runners — from beginners to seasoned racers — tend to have one thing in common: they build good habits and stick to them.

With City to Surf just around the corner, here are a few things worth taking from the runners who consistently get better:

🏃 Consistency > perfection
You don’t need every run to be perfect. You need to keep showing up.

🐢 Not every run needs to be hard
Easy running builds your aerobic base and helps you recover so you can train again.

💪 Build strength
Running is a high-load activity. Strong muscles and resilient tendons help you handle that load.

📈 Progress gradually
Your fitness can improve faster than your tissues adapt. Resist the temptation to suddenly add extra kilometres because you’re feeling good.

😴 Recovery is training
Sleep, nutrition and rest days aren't wasted time — they’re when your body adapts.

🚩 Don’t ignore the niggles
A little soreness that settles is one thing. Pain that progressively worsens or changes your running is worth addressing early.

🎯 Focus on the process
Whether your goal is to run the whole 12 km, beat your previous time or simply make it to the start line feeling confident — success is built one session at a time.

You don’t have to be a “runner” to start running. You just need to start building runner habits.

Swipe through for the habits that can help you get to the City to Surf stronger, healthier and more confident.

🏃‍♀️ See you at the start line!

Congratulations to our Sports Physiotherapist, Associate Professor Myles Murphy, on being awarded a prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigator Grant.

Myles has been awarded $608,092 to lead a five-year research program investigating ways to reduce injuries among Australian police recruits. The research aims to improve recruit retention, enhance workforce readiness and reduce the significant economic impact of training-related injuries.

We are incredibly proud to have Myles as part of the SportsMed Subiaco team. His commitment to advancing research and translating evidence into better outcomes for patients and active communities reflects the values we strive for every day.

Congratulations, Myles, on this outstanding achievement!
