The power of focus on wellbeing during cancer care 🌼

- expressions of interest now open -

I provide the time and space to support whole body health, using evidence informed recommendations alongside conventional treatment throughout your journey.

- Implementing chemo-preventative / anti-cancer strategies to support long term health through food as medicine, supplements, movement and lifestyle.

- Supporting whole body health by addressing concurrent conditions and additional health markers (e.g. cholesterol management, gut issues and more).

- Support enhanced treatment outcomes and help to prevent, manage or reduce side effects of treatment (e.g fatigue, nausea and more).

- Provide practical and empowering lifestyle modification recommendations.

- Hold space for education and counselling for both patients and carers.

I am now opening expressions of interest. Please get in touch via email - [email protected].

Please feel free to share this post💌

Supplement Use and Drug Interactions in Oncology 💭

Many people decide to start taking new supplements following a diagnosis, with estimates typically ranging from 15% to 50%.

The overall use of supplements after a cancer diagnosis is probably higher, for example, one 2009 study reported a prevalence of 69.3%.

However, self prescribing or buying ‘off the shelf’ at your local pharmacy / health food store is not recommended.

Clinical evaluation of potential interactions with concurrent oncological treatments, other medications, and even additional supplements is needed.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ 💛

What is Integrative Oncology?

Integrative Oncology works alongside conventional treatment, and can include different focus areas, including:
🌸 Evidence based diets
🌸 Food as medicine
🌸 Supplements
🌸 Movement
🌸 Mental and spiritual health

Nutritional medicine is empowering while also being practical, at any stage of your journey.

“Integrative oncology is a patient-centered, evidence-informed field of cancer care that utilizes mind and body practices, natural products, and/or lifestyle modifications from different traditions alongside conventional cancer treatments. Integrative oncology aims to optimize health, quality of life, and clinical outcomes across the cancer care continuum and to empower people to prevent cancer and become active participants before, during, and beyond cancer treatment.”

Hello world! Yes it’s been a while since I’ve popped in to say hi - and I am super excited to be back.

As you can see I have a new little friend, and we have been busy! I’ve been making the most of contact naps to up-skill in a very important area -
Integrative Oncology.

After supporting a close family member through treatment many moons ago, I always wanted to deepen my knowledge further, and feel grateful for the opportunity to do so now.

I am very much looking forward to reconnecting, and sharing the love for nutrition and food as medicine again 🪴

Zinc for the win 👏🏼

Zinc for the win 👏🏼

According to a new randomized controlled trial, zinc can significantly improve premenstrual symptoms including irritability, fatigue, bloating and headaches. The study used 220 mg zinc sulfate, which provides about 50 mg of elemental zinc.

I usually prescribe 30 mg for mood, period pain, PCOS, and other women's health conditions. Always take zinc with food because zinc on an empty stomach can make you feel sick.

Science has changed its mind. It happens. We now understand something called: 'inter-individual susceptibility to vitamin B6' - this means the dose of B6 contained in supplements previously declared 'safe for all', while 'safe for many' or even 'most', may not be safe for some. In this individual, when the supplement is taken consistently over weeks, months or even years, the excess may accumulate within a part of our nervous system that particularly impacts the senses in our limbs and most commonly presents as an unpleasant tingling or disturbed sensation in hands and feet. If the B6 supplement is not stopped the affected areas get bigger and typically 'ascend' e.g. moving up from the fingers into the palm or from the palm to the forearm etc, likewise, toes, feet and legs. The important thing to know is this is overwhelmingly regarded as reversible BUT it won't reverse or stop the minute you stop taking the B6. There will be several weeks of further worsening in most patients before a slow regression.

But we also now know more about what makes someone more susceptible to B6 excesses and we can use this knowledge to prevent this occurring in those unaffected but also unpack something really important about those who sadly have been. Talk to a professional

Reposting this important information about Vitex was the biggest ripple we caused last year...but do all our patients know? So here it is again in simple terms. Feel free to share it with all & let's together minimise the chances of women getting themselves in trouble with Vitex.

Chaste Tree or Vitex agnus-castus is a godsend for many but not for every woman! Vitex is commonly used to boost progesterone levels to relieve certain menstrual complaints, including cyclical mood issues. However, Vitex's effects on mood works primarily via mimicking a stimulating brain chemical called dopamine. Too much dopamine can manifest as anger, aggression, vivid dreaming etc. So Vitex would make the wrong choice in these excess dopamine scenarios! I've seen many cases where women self-prescribed Vitex and when practitioners suggest they stop taking it the patient is surprised at how much better they feel, emotionally. We love what Vitex offers to so many patients but I guess this is just another reminder that the best herbal medicine shouldn't be bought off the shelf but prescribed for you by a professional.

💜PURPLE DAY💜 is a global initiative dedicated to raising Epilepsy Awareness.

Purple Day was founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy started Purple Day to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know that they are not alone.

She named the day, Purple Day after the internationally recognised colour for epilepsy, lavender.

✨800 000 Australians will develop epilepsy during their lifetime.
✨The cause of epilepsy for up to 60% of people remains unknown (that's me!).
✨Epilepsy is more than just seizures. Epilepsy can have a significant social and psychological impact and often affects independence, learning, employment opportunities, relationships, mental health and quality of life.
✨People with epilepsy often face social stigma, discrimination and exclusion. A fundamental part of reducing this stigma is to raise public and professional awareness.
✨Epilepsy is not a mental illness, but people with epilepsy are at higher risk of anxiety and depression.

Info from Epilepsy Action Australia

In 3 days it will be 1 YEAR since my first seizure & I will be sharing more about my personal story then.

Wear something purple today and help to spread awareness! Tag me in your story or posts! 🌞💫
