💪 STRONGER SHOULDERS START BEFORE YOUR FIRST REP!

Did you know that how you position your shoulder blades can influence how you move during shoulder strength exercises?

Before you begin your shoulder workout, take a moment to set your shoulder blades.

🌿 Try this simple 3-step cue:

1. Stand tall
Keep your neck relaxed, your chest comfortable and your shoulders away from your ears.

2. Gently squeeze together
Draw your shoulder blades slightly towards each other, as if you are bringing them closer to your spine.

3. Gently draw them down
Let your shoulder blades move slightly down your back, without forcing them or arching your lower back.

✨ Now breathe normally and begin your exercise.

Remember, this is a gentle movement, not a hard squeeze. Your shoulder blades also need to move naturally during many exercises, particularly when reaching overhead, so don’t hold them rigidly in one position for every movement.

🩵 Why does this matter?

Developing awareness of your shoulder blade position can help you improve movement control and build a foundation for shoulder strength work.

Start gently, use a comfortable range and stop if you experience pain.

Small changes in how you move can help you build confidence in your body at every age.

🌿 OESTROGEN & BONE DENSITY: WHAT EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW

Did you know that oestrogen plays an important role in keeping your bones strong?

As women move through perimenopause and menopause, oestrogen levels decline. This can accelerate bone loss, increasing the risk of osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures.

🦴 Why does oestrogen matter?

Oestrogen helps regulate the natural process of bone renewal, balancing the breakdown of old bone with the formation of new bone. When oestrogen levels fall, this balance can shift towards greater bone loss.

The good news? There is plenty you can do to support your bone health as you age.

💪 Four ways to support stronger bones:

✨ 1. Strength training — Regular resistance exercise helps maintain muscle strength and supports bone health.

✨ 2. Weight-bearing activity — Activities such as walking, dancing and stair climbing can help maintain bone strength.

✨ 3. Nourish your body — Adequate calcium, vitamin D and protein are important for healthy bones and muscles.

✨ 4. Know your risk — Talk with your GP about your personal risk factors and whether a bone density scan is appropriate for you.

💚 Remember: Bone loss can begin before menopause, and the years around menopause are an important time to pay attention to your bone health.

You cannot control every aspect of ageing, but you can take meaningful steps to protect your strength, mobility and independence for the years ahead.

Understanding your changing body is one of the most powerful ways to invest in your future health.

💧 THE HEALING POWER OF WATER

There is something special about being in water. It can help your body move, your muscles relax and your mind find a little more calm.

And as women move through their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, water can be a wonderful part of looking after our health.

🌊 6 benefits of being in water

💙 1. Gentle on your joints
Water supports some of your body weight, reducing the load on your joints and making movement more comfortable.

💙 2. Builds strength
Water creates natural resistance. Walking, moving your arms and exercising in water can help build muscular strength.

💙 3. Supports cardiovascular health
Swimming and water-based exercise can improve fitness and support heart health.

💙 4. Improves balance and mobility
Moving in water gives you opportunities to practise coordination, flexibility and movement in a supportive environment.

💙 5. Can ease stress
Being in water can feel calming and provide a welcome break from the demands of everyday life. Swimming and gentle movement may also help improve mood.

💙 6. Makes movement more accessible
Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing joint discomfort or simply getting started with exercise, water may help you move with greater confidence.

🌿 And remember: you don’t have to swim laps to benefit.

Try walking through the water, gently moving your arms, floating or enjoying a relaxed swim. Choose what feels right for your body and your current level of fitness.

Combining it with appropriate weight-bearing activity and strength training helps support bone health and maintain muscle as you age.

✨ Your health doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, the simplest things are a great place to start.

50s — WHAT TO EXPECT 🌿

Your 50s can bring some significant changes but they can also be a time to become more informed, intentional and confident about your health and yourself.

A time of becoming centred. Of familiarisation. Of enjoying your own company. And setting yourself up for future resilience.

As oestrogen levels change around menopause, you may notice differences in your sleep, temperature regulation, mood, periods, muscles, joints and skin.

Bone loss can accelerate and maintaining muscle strength becomes harder but increasingly important for strength, balance and independence.

Heart health also becomes more important, with cardiovascular risk increasing after menopause.

The good news? There is a lot you can do to support your health.

💪 Strength training helps maintain muscle and bone health.

🥗 Prioritising nutritious food supports energy, muscle and bone health.

🚶‍♀️ Regular movement supports cardiovascular health, mobility and wellbeing.

😴 Prioritising sleep and recovery matters.

🧠 Looking after your mental wellbeing is part of looking after your whole health. Surrendering to differences of ups and downs may need to be your new normal.

Your 50s aren’t about trying to stay the same.

They’re about understanding what is changing and knowing what you can do about it.

Different chapter. Still you. 🤍
