Hi, I’m Gabbi 😊🫶
I’m the social media manager here at My Hero… but I’m also a person living with disability! I started working with My Hero a little over a year ago, and truly, it’s helped me learn and grow in ways I never expected 💚
Before this role, I’d never had a job before, even though it was something I really wanted for myself. It was never just about earning money. I craved the independence and confidence that comes from working hard and earning something for yourself 🙌 But at the same time, I worried constantly about whether I’d actually be able to work while still looking after my health and wellbeing.
Because my disability fluctuates, I convinced myself that no one would want to hire me. In my head, I was “too unreliable” to be a good employee. I felt anxious and insecure about the idea of working because I thought getting a job would mean constantly pushing myself beyond my limits and risking my health just to keep up.
But then I was given the opportunity to work with My Hero and learn more about social media 😁📸💻
One of the biggest things this role has taught me is that getting a job shouldn't require you to force yourself into it, sometimes it’s about creating a role that fits you instead 🤗 I’ve always been a creative person and already had an interest in things like photo editing and content creation, so together we were able to shape this role around my strengths, my needs, and what works best for me.
Some days you’ll see me working in the office, other days I’m working from my bed. If my health flares up and I need time off, that’s okay too. Having a job that actually works around me and my disability has genuinely been life-changing 🌟
Because of that support, I’ve had the space to learn, create, connect with so many amazing people, and grow so much as a person. I love meeting other participants, and you’ll usually spot me at our monthly community BBQs taking photos and chatting with everyone 📸😌
Through this role, I’ve gained so much confidence and it's shown me just how important it is for businesses, organisations and communities to look beyond someone's disability and see the person underneath. Sometimes all someone needs is a role that works with their strengths, their needs, and the way they function best ✨ You might just discover one of the most passionate, creative and dedicated employees you've ever had! 😁
If you see me around the office or any of the My Hero Events, feel free to say hi! 👋😊
