A big thank you to The Firebird Support Foundation for donating a walker to Picton Eyecare to help someone in our community who needed it.
Firebird Support Services is a registered Australian charity doing wonderful work by collecting and refurbishing donated walkers, wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other disability equipment, then providing them free to people who may otherwise struggle to afford these essential items.
If you or someone you know needs disability equipment, or perhaps you have equipment sitting at home that is no longer being used, consider getting in touch with Firebird — your donation could make a real difference to someone else's independence and mobility.
Firebird Support Services also provides NDIS support, so if you or a family member needs assistance navigating or accessing support, they may be able to help.

Zac Waters, a 13-year-old from Lehi, Utah, spent his summer break the way few teenagers do. He designed and built a custom wheelchair, from scratch, for a 21-month-old girl.

The idea started with a YouTube channel about 3D printing. Through it, Zac discovered MakeGood, a nonprofit that 3D-prints assistive devices for people with disabilities around the world, and he set out to make one of those devices himself, a wheelchair for a 21-month-old girl who needed one.

Designing, printing, testing, and assembling the wheelchair took him roughly 300 hours.

The finished chair wasn't just functional. Zac gave it pink accents, the girl's favorite color, plus a removable cupholder and tray table, and a space in the back for her heavier medical equipment.

He also built it to last. The chair has soft adjustable straps, an adjustable footrest, and an adjustable headrest, so it can grow with her.

His grandmother, Charlotte Waters, put it this way. "His age does not define his ability to make a difference. His character does."

Zac says he wants to do "something techie" when he grows up, and hopes to keep using his 3D printing skills to help more people.

Asked why he did it, his answer was simple. "It combines my two favorite things in life: 3D printing and helping people in need. It just makes sense!"
