Does Acupuncture Hurt?

It’s probably one of the first questions people ask when they’re considering acupuncture.

The short answer? Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine.

They are very different from the needles used for injections or blood tests, and most people are surprised by how little they actually feel.

You may notice a tiny prick as the needle is inserted, followed by sensations such as warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a gentle ache around the point.

And sometimes… you feel almost nothing at all.

Your practitioner will choose the points and technique according to your individual treatment and will always work within your comfort level.

One of the things our clients often notice during acupuncture sessions is that the needles aren’t necessarily placed directly on the area that is causing discomfort.

So why?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is understood through a network of channels and connections. An acupuncture point on one part of the body may be selected to influence another area entirely.

For example, your practitioner may work with points on the hands, feet, legs or elsewhere on the body when supporting discomfort in the neck, shoulders or back.

It’s not random; each point is selected based on your individual presentation, the patterns your practitioner identifies and the way different areas of the body are understood to interact.

This is one of the fascinating aspects of acupuncture:
the point being treated and the area you feel may not always be the same.

Every treatment is individual, and the combination of points can change from one appointment to the next depending on what your practitioner is working to support.

Dry needling uses fine, sterile needles; your practitioner gently inserts the needle into specific areas of muscle tension to encourage the muscle to relax, improve circulation, and support the body's natural healing processes.

Dry needling may assist with a variety of musculoskeletal concerns, including:

We're excited to share that Dry Needling appointments are now open for bookings!

Dry needling is a treatment technique that uses fine, sterile needles to target tight muscles and myofascial trigger points. It is commonly used to help relieve muscular pain, reduce tension, improve movement, and support recovery following injury or ongoing physical strain.

Our practitioner Rachael is now offering Dry Needling and is also in the final stages of completing her Bachelor of Acupuncture, bringing together a strong understanding of anatomy, muscle function, and holistic patient care.
