Let's talk postpartum catheters 🩷
Not something anyone tells you about at your baby shower, but here we are.
If you had an epidural, an instrumental delivery, a c-section, or significant perineal swelling/tearing - there's a good chance you had a catheter in during or after birth. And sometimes, that can leave your bladder feeling a little "off" afterwards.
What does that actually look like?
🚽 Massive wees (we're talking horse-wee status)
🚽 Peeing "just because," not because you feel the urge
🚽 Drinking heaps but not weeing much
🚽 A sudden, out-of-nowhere urge to go
🚽 Missing that gradual "I need to go soon" feeling
Why we care about this as women's health physios - left unchecked, this can lead to bladder overdistension, overflow incontinence, incomplete emptying, UTIs, and in rare cases, issues affecting your kidneys.
📍 Early postpartum? Flag it with your midwife or care team ASAP.
📍 Already discharged? Chat to your GP or book in with a local Women's Health Physio for an assessment.
📍 Preparing for birth? Keep this in your back pocket - knowing the signs means you can act early.
Your bladder deserves attention too. Don't brush off the weird wee habits as "just a postpartum thing" 💛
