Empirical Health Herbs

Empirical Health Herbs Wholesale company of the highest quality Chinese Herbs, extensively tested for safety and efficacy.

Driven by a passion for seeing better results for his patients, Founder and Director, Dr Simon J Feeney, spent the last ten years scaling the planet in search of top quality herbs. He found that in too many cases the incorrect herb or very low quality herbs were made available to most practitioners in Australia. He didn't stop this search until he found Andrew Ellis from Spring Wind in the United States.

Inside one of China’s traditional herb markets.

For centuries, Chinese herb markets have acted as centres of trade, education, processing, and herbal knowledge.

Walking through these markets, you quickly realise herbal medicine is not simply about products.

It is about:

- sourcing
- preparation
- regional knowledge
- craftsmanship
- and generations of observation.

Every texture, aroma, colour, and preparation method tells part of the story.

Recently, Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) was officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

The shift reflects a growing recognition that this condition is not simply “an ovarian issue,” but rather a complex, systemic presentation involving hormones, metabolism, emotional wellbeing, reproductive health, and more.

From a Classical Chinese Medicine perspective, this broader framing feels remarkably familiar.

For centuries, classical physicians observed reproductive health through the lens of interconnected systems - digestion, fluid metabolism, emotional regulation, circulation, constitutional vitality, and cyclical balance.

Rather than treating a label alone, the focus was placed on understanding the unique pattern presenting in each individual.

Interestingly, modern conversations around PMOS appear to be moving towards a more integrated understanding of women’s health.

A thoughtful shift worth reflecting on.

What an incredible experience.

Over ten unforgettable days, practitioners from across Australia, New Zealand, North America and beyond came together to explore the heart of Chinese herbal medicine alongside Zoey Xinyi Gong, RD. .

From bustling herb markets and medicinal plant farms to manufacturing facilities, hospitals, and clinical discussions, this tour offered a rare opportunity to see every stage of the herbal medicine journey firsthand.

But beyond the education, one of the highlights was the community that formed along the way. What started as a group of practitioners quickly became a network of colleagues, collaborators and friends, all united by a shared passion for Chinese medicine.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this tour such a special experience. We are grateful to have shared it with you.

We’re already planning our next tours and look forward to welcoming another group of practitioners to China very soon.

Classical physicians placed enormous importance on herbal preparation methods.

Preparation was understood to influence how a herb moved, what it targeted, and how it interacted within a formula.

This level of nuance is one of the reasons traditional herbal medicine developed such sophisticated formulation systems over centuries.

Quality assessment goes far beyond appearance.

When assessing incoming herbs, we look closely at:

- aroma
- colour
- texture
- density
- moisture
- cleanliness
- consistency
- preparation quality

Two herbs may look similar visually while differing significantly in overall quality.

Careful assessment remains an important part of maintaining integrity throughout the manufacturing process.

For centuries, classical physicians developed formulas based on relationships, balance, and direction.

Understanding how herbs interact within a formula remains one of the foundations of traditional formulation theory.

In traditional herbal medicine, harvest timing was never considered insignificant.

Different stages of growth were traditionally associated with different qualities and characteristics.

Roots, flowers, bark, leaves, and fruits were often harvested at very specific times based on centuries of observation.

Season, maturity, climate, and preparation all formed part of the broader understanding of herbal quality.

In classical formulation, richer formulas were not automatically considered better.

Digestive capacity, fluid transformation, and overall movement were carefully considered before increasing nourishment.

Heavy tonic formulas may become difficult to tolerate when transformation and movement are weak.

Sometimes support that is too rich for the presentation may contribute to further stagnation rather than improvement.

Understanding when a formula is becoming too heavy for the patient is an important part of clinical refinement.

In Classical Chinese Medicine, flavour was considered an important part of understanding herbal behaviour.

For centuries, physicians observed relationships between flavour, direction, movement, and overall formula balance.

This deeper level of observation helped shape the sophistication of classical formulation theory.
