Empowering independence through smart technology in NDIS SDA Accommodation

In this highlight from Outreach, we explore how integrated smart home technology like voice-activated Alexa systems is revolutionising Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

From turning on lights to opening blinds with a simple voice command, smart home technology gives NDIS participants control over their everyday space. While it won't work for everyone, for many people it means needing less help from support workers for basic tasks, giving them back independence, freedom, and control in their own home.

Building connections that matter at the CARE Melton Expo! 🌟
A huge thank you to everyone who dropped by the I-Help Disability Services stall at Cobblebank Stadium today!
It was a fantastic turnout and a privilege to connect directly with participants, families, and fellow NDIS professionals. We had great discussions around our Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes and Core Supports, exploring how we can continue to empower individuals to live independently and stay connected to their community.
A special highlight was connecting with Mayor Melton City Council, Cr Lara Carli.

National Carers Week (11–17 October) is our chance to celebrate and say thank you to the more than 3 million Australians who give unpaid care to a family member or friend.

Under this year’s theme, “Care for a carer: Making carers visible,” we want to shine a light on the incredible family members, friends, and advocates who support individuals living with disabilities every single day. Caring for someone with a disability involves a unique blend of physical, emotional, and navigational dedication, often behind closed doors. Ensuring our carers are supported means ensuring participants thrive too.

Here are a few meaningful ways you can stand by a disability carer today:
• Check-in regularly: A quick phone call or message to ask how they are doing matters.
• Offer a break: Assist with respite by stepping in so they can take a breather or run personal errands.
• Acknowledge and appreciate: Validate the tireless effort, advocacy, and love they pour into their role.
• Initiate support: Don't wait for them to ask, offer specific help like dropping off a meal or helping with transport.
• Encourage self-care: Remind them that taking time for themselves isn't selfish, it's necessary.

With warmer weather on the way, emergency preparedness is more critical than ever. In this Outreach highlight, Tim Marchinton from CFA Victoria explains the importance of putting people in the "front seat" of their safety, encouraging everyone to pack a ready-to-go bag with essential medications, phone chargers, and a battery radio for emergency broadcasts, while ensuring the VicEmergency app is active for early warnings.

For NDIS participants and aged care participants, having a pre-packed "Go Bag" stocked with extra prescription medications, specialised equipment, and printed care plans ensures that support workers and emergency services can respond seamlessly without delaying evacuation when catastrophic conditions hit.

Preparing early makes all the difference. Reviewing your emergency plan ahead of the summer heat helps set up every individual and support network for the best possible outcome.

📢 Disability & NDIS Support Updates: 3 Big Changes Active as of October 1

1. Early Intervention Shifts to "Thriving Kids":
Children aged 8 and under with developmental delays or autism can now get early support directly through local health and early learning services instead of the NDIS. No official diagnosis is needed to get started. Current NDIS plans stay as they are for now, and families will gradually move over to community supports between now and 2028.

2. Budget Reductions for Core Support Categories:
Under new NDIS regulations, funding reductions are being applied to Social & Community Participation (up to 50%) and Improved Daily Living Skills (10%) during plan reviews starting October 1. Essential daily care, housing, and health supports are fully exempt. To protect your funding, ensure you gather solid clinical evidence before your next reassessment.

3. Mandatory Registration for SIL Providers:
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is now a registered support category under the NDIS Act. Service providers delivering SIL must be NDIS-registered or have an active application logged with the NDIS Commission. Providers who have not submitted an application are no longer authorised to deliver SIL, ensuringg all participants receive supports that meet official quality and safety standards.
