Obtaining a timely diagnosis is critical for accessing early interventions, planning future care, and ensuring individuals retain maximum choice and control over their lives.

Individuals and businesses can support early detection and action this month by educating teams on early cognitive signs, creating accessible environments, or exploring resources at Alzheimer's Disease International (https://www.alzint.org/about/).

In this Episode 6 highlight of Outreach, we look at how inclusive community groups such as NEMCA keep social activities accessible through My Aged Care and NDIS support.

For older members and people living with disability, community doesn't need to be complicated, sometimes it's as simple as sitting together, playing Mahjong, and having a chit-chat.

At just $25 a year, these vital social spaces remain very affordable. Even better, eligible participants can use funding from My Aged Care Home Care Packages or NDIS plans to cover social and community participation costs.

It’s a powerful reminder that staying connected and avoiding isolation should be within everyone's reach.

From isolation to community

In this Episode 6 highlight of Outreach, we share the story behind a vital community safety net supporting cultural connection, seniors, and disability.

Following the tragedy in Tiananmen Square, 40,000 Chinese students received permanent residency, growing to over 100,000 as families joined them. Facing language barriers, many felt deeply isolated.

Local GP Dr Stanley Chang stepped up to change that, partnering with Darebin Council to secure a subsidised council venue in Preston, Melbourne, which was used to establish the North Eastern Melbourne Chinese Association (NEMCA) over 30 years ago.

What started as a response to loneliness and isolation, grew into a lifeline serving over 375 members.

As the story shows, true health isn't just medical, it's having a community where you belong.
