Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month saw many people, community groups, and health services, fundraising and helping to raise increased awareness.

We'd like to give a shout out to Danica Edmonds who completed her first marathon at the ASICS Gold Coast Marathon in July, in memory of a dear friend. Danica's generous community got behind her and donated $4,748 to her fundraising page where she wrote: "I'd love for all those kilometres to support a cause that means a great deal to me." Danica told us: "I’m very grateful to have been able to support even in a small way the amazing work HANCA do." Congratulations and thank you, Danica!

Mobile Dental Providers Australia (MDPA) invited HANCA to speak at their Conference in July, to distribute educational resources, and be the recipients of their fundraising. We were very grateful for the opportunity for HANCA's Helpline Nurse, Faye Nacup, to present and share information about HANCA's support services, and for over $600 raised from conference participants.

In July also, the Hobart Harps held a Christmas in July to help raise awareness about Head and Neck Cancer and donating $600 from their 'held on 25 July. Niahm told us: "It was such a fantastic afternoon, with a great turnout from the Hobart Harps community. Everyone really got into the Christmas spirit, and it was wonderful to see so many people come together to support causes that mean so much to us. Thank you for all the incredible work that Head and Neck Cancer Australia does. We were honoured to be able to support your organisation, and we hope our donation can make a small difference." Many thanks!

If you're at the conference, be sure to stop by and say hello to our lovely team wearing their tshirts!

Meanwhile, Alex and Megan are hard at work filming our Fundamentals of Head and Neck Cancer Management and Support education program today. Find out more and register your interest at the link in the comment section below⬇️

What another great year for our Souper Heroes, who've collectively raised $26,844 from this year's Soup for the Soul™ events - and with one more still to be held this month! Congratulations to each and everyone of you, to your local communities and supporters who've helped achieve increased awareness about Head and Neck Cancer and raised funds to support HANCA's service delivery.

The excitement and engagement has been fantastic, with events held in a range of health services across the country, in farmers markets, clubs, restaurants, cafes, parks, workplaces, schools, and online. Some gained coverage from their local media, a Federal MP, and even a popular Instagram recipe page.

The influx of photos has been welcomed with stories about communities coming together, enticing soup and food delights, best soup prizes, raffles, choregraphed dancing, Head and Neck Cancer education briefings, and more.

The final Soup for the Soul™ event will be held on 14 September, after which we'll draw the winner of our Smeg Espresso Coffee Machine, valued at $1,211 and proudly donated by Appliances Online.

For the second-year running, the ACT and Southern NSW Head and Neck Cancer Support group held a raffle fundraiser for HANCA, this year raising $4,593.17! Following two months of ticket sales, members of the support group gathered at Gang Gang Cafe on World Head and Neck Cancer Day to raise public awareness about Head and Neck Cancer and announce the lucky winners.

"As a group of people impacted by Head and Neck Cancer, the ACT and Southern NSW Support Group are keen to do what we can to help Head and Neck Cancer Australia raise awareness of these life changing cancers and help people cope with the lifelong aftermath of the disease. Many people who get these cancers have never heard of them before they are diagnosed, and given there is no screening, awareness is the only way to ensure people catch these cancers early, saving lives. We're thankful to those businesses and people who generously donated prizes. It's greatly appreciated and we couldn't do it without your support. " says Jen Mackay.

From Team HANCA, many thanks once again to the ACT and Southern NSW Head and Neck Cancer Support Group.

When HANCA first found out that Fiona Hogarth was being joined by her extended family for the City2Surf on 9 August we were absolutely excited for her and to see the wonderful support they received by their community of family and friends to raise $12,062! What a memorable family day and the outfits she made and organised for her adorable grandchildren was a standout! Fiona shared:

"I was diagnosed with Nead and Neck Cancer of the tongue in September 2019 and had 7 weeks of daily radiation and weekly chemotherapy. I really appreciated the resources I found on the HANCA (Beyond Five as it was then) and found it very helpful.

In September 2025, 6 weeks before a big Japan trip for my 60th birthday I was diagnosed with stage 4 head and neck cancer now in my lungs. I have had chemotherapy and immunotherapy. I am on a clinical trial although it has been put on hold for the moment. I feel good and am enjoying life.

My wonderful family and I walked together in the City2Surf so we could raise awareness for HANCA, and I really want to raise awareness of Head and Neck Cancers and hope that with the money my family and I raised will help provide information and assistance to people who need it."

Our very best wishes and thanks to you Fiona and to your wonderful family for all your generous support for the Head and Neck Cancer community.
