Dr. Laura Crane calls for teachers to be empowered with the right training. Understanding communication and social needs is just as vital as teaching academics.

Quote: “Teachers need the right training to support autistic learners—understanding social and communication needs is just as important as academics.”

We came across this article about a recent lawsuit won by two blind students who were denied accessible learning materials. The thing that stood out most was that one professor was claimed to have told the individuals that they were not welcome in their classroom because they were blind - which honestly is unacceptable.

The students were looking to learn mathematics, something that does not rely on visual ability to achieve. Education has become far too synonymous with only allowing certain people to access it (university fees for example) and this is a trend that technology should and can reverse.

Hopefully it doesn't continue to take educators being sued to see some positive change in the space!

Supporting Self-Regulated Learning in Primary Education (Montessori Research)

One question I find myself asking more often is:
How much of learning should be directed by adults and how much should be driven by the learner?

Research into Montessori education offers some interesting insights.
Rather than relying heavily on external direction, Montessori environments are designed to help children develop independence, responsibility and self-regulation over time.

The goal isn't simply academic achievement.

It's helping children become capable learners.

As technology opens new possibilities for personalised education, I think this idea becomes increasingly relevant.

How do we give children more ownership of their learning journey while still providing the support they need?

Kids with ADHD often need to move to stay focused.
Breaks and active learning are not rewards, they are part of what helps them do their best.

“Allow regular breaks and active learning. Kids with ADHD aren’t ‘naughty,’ they just need to move and reset.”

Video content loses detail when visual cues are not explained. Audio description provides clear narration that supports people with low vision and improves comprehension for a wider group of viewers. This approach builds stronger engagement in education, training, and public messaging.

K-12 doesn't always get the most attention with education accessibility as the market for distance and online learning is far smaller. However the learnings from the 2020 pandemic and a sudden shift to online lesson delivery at this time highlighted how far behind some of the technology was.

Maryland brought in a law to ensure the technology kept up with the needs of students, with a key element being that the law shifts the liability risk for inaccessibility from the school systems to the vendors of digital tools by including an indemnification clause. This means that companies cannot simply claim that their technology is accessible, but instead are fully accountable for these claims, including assuming responsibility for remediation if necessary as well as any liability for inaccessibility.

Yes, schools should be responsible for making their content accessible for their students. But they should also be able to trust that what they purchase does what the seller says it does.

Even a single state (or even a single school) taking steps to improve learning outcomes for students is how change happens - pressure is applied on their colleagues and competitors to follow suit and the beneficiaries are students.

Dr. Barry Prizant encourages us to see strengths first. When we understand from the child’s perspective, support becomes more meaningful.

Quote: “We need to see autism through a lens of strengths, not deficits. Support comes from understanding the child’s perspective.”

Have you heard about the Capitol Crawl? While it may not have received the same media exposure as the 2021 Capitol Attack, it had a profound impact on the lives of people living with disability in America for years to come.

As a demonstration of the inaccessibility of government services, protestors left their wheelchairs, crutches and other mobility aids at the bottom of the stairs to the Capitol and crawled their way towards change.

It is sad to think that something like this was required to make the need for a change apparent, but it is the actions of individuals that can truly make a difference in the lives of all.

Hopefully we don't see another demonstration of this kind in future, but it is certainly a historical event that deserves to be remembered.

The 1990 protest demonstrated the barriers that inaccessible buildings create for people with disabilities.

Self-Regulation in Children and Teenagers (Raising Children Network)

When we talk about self-regulation, we're really talking about a life skill.

The ability to pause before reacting.

To manage frustration.

To stay focused when something feels difficult.

To recover after a setback.

A helpful article from Raising Children Network explores how these skills develop over time and how adults can support that process.

What I like most is that it reminds us self-regulation isn't something children either have or don't have.

It's something they learn.

And like any skill, it develops through practice, support and experience.

Learning about the causes of ADHD is important, but it is just the beginning.

We also need tools and strategies that help kids grow and learn in everyday life.

“We want to understand the genetic, neurological, and environmental factors... and then build interventions that really help kids develop.”
