[Shout Out] If you have tuned into commercial television in the last week you may have noticed a significant shift in the representation of people with disability in the advertising of some our biggest brands.

Shift 20 is an initiative looking to match the 20% of Australians living with a disability to a 20% representation within advertising.

It's difficult to measure the impact that seeing someone who is like you represented in the media can have on individuals. We applaud the efforts of Dylan Alcott and the team and can't wait to see the initiative grow.

Have you come across the CAeC model before? It stands for (C)reating (A)ccessibl(e) (C)ontent, is pronounced like cake, and uses the analogy of baking a cake for the components required for producing accessible content.

It is a learning method developed collaboratively between University of Dundee, TechAbility & Ace Centre designed to simplify the process of making accessible content into easily digestible components.

One of the ways we have found the most success in teaching people new concepts, or getting them to understand variations of existing concepts, is to liken it to something they already understand. Most people have either made a cake before, or at least understand there are a combination of tools, ingredients and steps that produce the end result.

Supporting Neurodivergent Student Success

One of the most encouraging shifts I'm seeing in education is a move away from asking:

"How do we fix this student?"

towards asking:

"How do we better understand this student?"

A recent article from Northwestern University explores this idea, encouraging educators to recognise both the strengths and challenges that neurodivergent learners bring to the classroom.

That balance is important.

Ignoring challenges doesn't help children. But neither does defining them by those challenges.

The most effective educators I've met are the ones who stay curious. They look beyond behaviour, beyond test scores, beyond labels and ask what might help this particular learner succeed.

Every child has a different combination of strengths, interests, motivations and barriers.

The more we understand that, the more personalised learning can become.

Instead of someone being singled out as being 'different' with special accessible access, what if we catered for all abilities.

When communicating online in particular, there should be no excuse for delivering information that is not accessible to everyone.

When we remove barriers everyone benefits.

Let's face it, math is one of those topics where most people understand it to a certain point, but then they get lost. Remembering formulas, understanding notation, referencing previous theories required to build on the current concept... it isn't the easiest thing in the world to just pick up and run with.

Math has also been a traditionally visual medium, writing out equations can be simpler than trying to recreate them digitally without the right software and often more complex ideas span a large amount of space.

With all that being said, there is no actual reason for advanced mathematics to be limited to those who can write things out on paper. Some of the tips in this resource from the University of York can help to at least communicate math problems in a more accessible way - removing one more barrier to math for the masses.
