PCOS has been renamed
Following 14 years of international research, advocacy, and consultation with people with lived experience, healthcare professionals, researchers, and organisations across the world, the condition traditionally known as PCOS (Polycystic O***y Syndrome) will transition to a new name:
PMOS Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
This change recognises what so many people living with the condition have long said:
PCOS has never been “just about ovaries” or “just about fertility.”
The previous name centred around “cysts” that many people with the condition do not actually have, while overlooking the complex hormonal, metabolic, endocrine, inflammatory, cardiovascular, mental health, and whole-body impacts experienced across the lifespan.
The new terminology aims to better reflect:
✨ The whole-body nature of the condition
✨ Lifelong impacts beyond reproductive years
✨ Metabolic and endocrine health considerations
✨ Earlier recognition and diagnosis
✨ Improved education, awareness, and research opportunities
A 3-year global transition period will now begin, where both terms PCOS and PMOS will co-exist as healthcare systems, organisations, clinicians, and communities adapt to the change.
At QENDO, we know that language matters.
Names shape understanding.
Understanding shapes care.
We also know that for many people, this may bring mixed emotions; relief, confusion, validation, uncertainty, or hope. Change in healthcare terminology takes time, education, and thoughtful implementation.
Most importantly:
A name change alone does not fix the barriers people face.
But it can be a powerful step toward improving awareness, reducing misconceptions, strengthening research, and helping people feel seen in the complexity of their condition.
We will continue sharing education and resources as this transition unfolds globally đź’›
