Big news for little communicators 🌱

Spill the Beans Speech Pathology Services is now on the Preschool Boost menu of suppliers as part of South Australia’s Flying Start initiative.

With 3-year-old kindy rolling out across SA, this is a really exciting time for early years support — and we’re very happy to be part of it.

Through Preschool Boost, we can support early childhood services with practical, play-based speech pathology support around:

✨ communication and language
✨ play and interaction
✨ early literacy
✨ educator coaching and parent education
✨ group-based supports
✨ everyday preschool strategies

The best bit? These supports are accessed through the preschool’s Preschool Boost allocation — no NDIS needed for families to benefit within their early learning setting.

Not everyone will understand the way you parent your child. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

Supporting an autistic child may mean being flexible, adjusting expectations or doing things differently… not because you’re “giving in,” but because you’re responding to what your child needs.

Today in session, my client and I spent time exploring thoughts, feelings and perspective-taking. 💭

Side note: Elsa is probably wondering why I thought speech pathology and illustration were interchangeable career paths. 😅

Anyway, I digress.

Sometimes I wish people came with thought bubbles.

Mostly so I could understand why my husband puts an empty milk carton back in the fridge instead of the bin. 🤔😂

Unfortunately, people don’t come with thought bubbles.

And that’s exactly what can make social situations tricky sometimes.

Today in speech pathology, we explored why understanding what’s happening inside someone else’s brain can actually be pretty challenging.

Using Anna and Elsa, we wondered:

❄️ What might Anna be thinking?

❄️ What might Elsa be thinking?

❄️ How might they each be feeling?

❄️ What could they do next?

The goal wasn’t to find the “right” answer.

Instead, we were exploring the idea that different people can think differently about the same situation... and that’s okay.

Social communication support isn’t about teaching children to hide who they are or respond in one “correct” way. It’s about helping them understand themselves, understand others, communicate their needs, navigate misunderstandings, and build relationships that work for them.

Sometimes social communication therapy looks less like practising conversations and more like drawing questionable versions of Frozen characters while talking about invisible thoughts. 💙

Happy Mother’s Day to the mums behind the milestones 💛

The ones researching late at night, attending appointments, advocating in meetings, practicing speech words in the car, celebrating tiny wins, and loving their child fiercely through it all.

So much of the work you do is invisible but it matters deeply.

Student spotlight ✨
Amie has been with us on Wednesdays for 5 weeks — and has very quickly become part of the Wednesday rhythm!
(And yes… it’s taken me this long to post about her 🙃 solo speechie life 😅)

Safe to say Wednesdays have been a little less lonely around here — I’ve definitely been enjoying the company 👀

Here she is running a Story Champs session like a champ!

She’s completing her placement through Flinders University’s rural program based in Mount Gambier — and we’re always keen to support future regional speechies 🤍

Thanks to the families who have welcomed Amie into their sessions too — it makes these placements so meaningful 🤍

One of the best parts of having students is the two-way learning. Nothing like being asked “why?” to realise how many things you do on autopilot 😅

Trialled this sensory Easter box so you don’t have to… 🫠
Key learning: take it outside.🙃

BUT in between the chaos… so much language 👇
🥕 Actions: scoop, fill, open, close, hop
🥕 Concepts: in, on, under
🥕 Counting: eggs, bunnies, “one more!”
🥕 Colours: “blue egg”, “pink bunny”
🥕 Pretend play: feed the bunny, eat, yum, more

You really don’t need anything fancy, these items were just from the $2 shop:
👉 model simple phrases
👉 follow their lead
👉 repeat, repeat, repeat

10/10 for language 🐰
2/10 for mess management
would still recommend 🐣✨

Good news: Medicare expanded speech therapy funding 🎉🥳

Plot twist: terms & conditions absolutely apply.

If your child has stuttering or a speech sound disorder, you may now access additional rebated sessions (per lifetime, before 25).

It’s a rebate, so there’s still out-of-pocket costs and it doesn’t cover language disorder, or literacy challenges like dyslexia unfortunately. It is a good start though and good news for many families!
