At Hearing Aid Specialists, we had the privilege of visiting Eriksholm Research Centre to learn more about the exciting research currently taking place in hearing technology and innovation.

Their research spans some fascinating areas:
• Adaptive systems that learn from and respond to your environment
• Technologies that understand listening intent — helping identify who and what you want to hear
• Models that optimise sound based on human perception, rather than simply focusing on audibility
• AI-driven signal processing that is rethinking how sound is captured, processed and enhanced

Together, their work points towards a shared vision for the future of hearing technology:
- Hearing aids that continuously adapt to you
- Technology that understands who and what you want to hear
- Intelligent systems that optimise for real human listening experiences, not just audibility
- AI models that unlock new levels of performance in complex listening environments

It was incredibly valuable to see firsthand the research and innovation helping shape the future of hearing care. A future where hearing solutions aren't just smarter — they're truly personal.

Did you know that the Australian Government’s Hearing Services Program (HSP) provides subsidised hearing services and devices to eligible Australians with hearing loss?

The HSP can help eligible people access:

✅ Hearing assessments
✅ Hearing devices, including hearing aids
✅ Rehabilitation, communication support and advice
✅Ongoing support and device maintenance options

Who may be eligible?

The program may be available to Australian citizens or permanent residents who meet certain criteria, including:

✅ Pensioner Concession Card holders
✅ Eligible Veteran Gold or White Card holders

Eligibility depends on which part of the HSP you qualify for, so it’s worth checking your individual circumstances. The Australian Government has an online eligibility checker and application process.

If you or someone you love is struggling to hear conversations, the TV, the phone or everyday sounds, don’t ignore it — help may be available.

Getting used to hearing aids takes time — and that’s completely normal!

When you first start wearing hearing aids, sounds may seem louder, sharper, or simply different. You might notice things you haven’t heard clearly for years, such as footsteps, birds, the rustling of clothing, or the hum of everyday appliances.

For many people, the adjustment period takes a few weeks, although everyone is different.

The key is to wear your hearing aids regularly and give your brain time to adapt. Start in quieter environments and gradually build up to conversations, restaurants and busier surroundings.

And remember, you’re not on your own! We can also help fine-tune your devices and make adjustments to ensure they are comfortable and working well for you.

Be patient with yourself. Better hearing is a journey, not an overnight change.

Your hearing is one of the most valuable tools you have on the job—but it's also one of the easiest to take for granted.

Power tools, heavy machinery, grinders, saws, and compressors can all produce noise levels that cause permanent hearing damage over time. The challenging part is that hearing loss is often gradual, meaning you may not notice it until it's too late.

This Tradie Awareness Month, make hearing protection part of your daily routine:

✅ Wear the right ear protection for the task
✅ Replace damaged or worn-out earplugs and earmuffs
✅ Take breaks from noisy environments where possible
✅ Encourage your mates to protect their hearing too

Looking after your hearing isn't just about work—it's about being able to hear your family, enjoy conversations, listen to music, and stay connected for years to come.

Protect your hearing. Protect your future.

🚨 Important Notice for Hearing Aid & Cochlear Implant Users🚨

If you wear Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids or cochlear implants this is something you'll want to know.

On Monday, 27 July 2026 the Australian Government will conduct a nationwide test of the new AusAlert emergency warning system

🕑 Time:2:00 pm AEST (please check your local time if you're in a different Australian time zone).

During the test, compatible mobile phones will play a 10-second emergency alert siren If your hearing devices are connected to your phone via Bluetooth, the alert may stream directly into your hearing aids or cochlear implant processor, which could be unexpectedly loud or startling.

To avoid being caught by surprise, you may wish to:
🔹 Turn off Bluetooth on your phone around 10 minutes before the test so the alert plays through your phone's speaker instead.
🔹 If preferred, briefly remove your hearing aid(s) or cochlear implant processor just before the scheduled test time.

We're sharing this information so our hearing health community has plenty of notice and can prepare if needed.
