An Ancient Symbol With a Much Bigger Story
The Pentagram is an interlaced five-pointed star and one of the oldest symbols still commonly used in magical practice today. Far from being something created by modern witchcraft, variations of the five-pointed star can be traced back thousands of years. Pentagrams have been found among the ruins of Pompeii, while an even earlier example appears on pottery from Tell Asmar in ancient Mesopotamia, dating to around 2750 BCE.
Throughout its long history, the Pentagram has carried many different meanings. In witchcraft it is strongly associated with protection, while its five points are commonly used to represent Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit. The shape has also been connected symbolically with the human body — the upper point representing the head, the two side points the arms and the lower points the legs.
Although the words Pentagram and Pentacle are often used as though they mean exactly the same thing, traditionally there is a distinction. The Pentagram is the five-pointed star itself. A Pentacle is a physical ritual object upon which a Pentagram or other magical symbols are painted, engraved or carved. Pentacles are often placed upon an altar and used during ritual and magical practice.

🌿 Working With a Pentacle
A Pentacle can be used as a working surface upon an altar, with ritual tools, oils, charms, crystals or other objects placed upon it for consecration, charging or intention work. It may also be incorporated into protective workings or simply remain on the altar as a symbol of the elements, balance and protection.
Interestingly, one traditional interpretation connects the shape of the Pentagram with the human hand. As our hands protect, create, work and earn, this symbolism has contributed to the Pentagram being used not only for protection but also within prosperity and money magick.
🌿 Tips From Our Apothecary
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the Pentagram is that it is automatically a symbol of evil. It isn’t. The symbol existed thousands of years before modern witchcraft and has appeared across different cultures, religions and magical traditions with many different meanings.
You may also see the Pentagram with either one point or two points facing upward. The orientation alone does not automatically make the symbol positive or negative. Its meaning comes from the tradition, intention and context in which it is being used.
So when you see a Pentagram or Pentacle in The Apothecary, don’t just see a five-pointed star — you’re looking at a symbol with thousands of years of history behind it.
