THE COGNITIVE DISTORTION LOOP
Have you ever noticed how one small thought can completely change your mood, behaviour, and even your entire day?
This is often the result of a cognitive distortion loop — a cycle of unhelpful thinking patterns that reinforce themselves over time.
The Loop Looks Like This:
➡️ Trigger or Situation
Something happens.
➡️ Automatic Thought
Your mind instantly creates a meaning or interpretation.
➡️ Cognitive Distortion
The thought becomes filtered through fear, assumptions, self-criticism, perfectionism, catastrophising, or other distorted thinking patterns.
➡️ Emotional Response
You experience emotions such as anxiety, shame, guilt, anger, sadness, or frustration.
➡️ Behaviour or Reaction
You react based on how you feel:
* Avoidance
* People pleasing
* Withdrawal
* Defensiveness
* Overworking
* Seeking reassurance
➡️ Reinforcement
The behaviour strengthens the original belief, making the thought seem even more true next time.
And the cycle repeats…
🔄 Trigger → Thought → Distortion → Emotion → Behaviour → Reinforcement
⸻
The Good News
You don’t have to stop the thought.
You simply need to become aware of it.
Awareness creates choice.
When you learn to identify cognitive distortions, you can pause and ask:
✨ Is this thought a fact or a story?
✨ What evidence supports this belief?
✨ What evidence challenges it?
✨ What would I tell someone I love if they were having this thought?
✨ Is there a more balanced perspective?
⸻
🌱 Healing begins when we stop believing every thought that enters our mind.
Thoughts are not facts.
They are mental events that can be observed, questioned, and reframed.
The more awareness you bring to your thinking, the more freedom you create in your emotional wellbeing.
💚 Awareness → Understanding → Compassion → Change
