Strong communities are built through connection, opportunity and shared pride.

In Dubbo, Mick Garnett, CEO of Wheelchair Sports NSW / ACT , joined Michelle Bain, Simone Taylor and Ryley Batt from GIO to celebrate the launch of the Dubbo Wombats, the 24th independent wheelchair basketball club in NSW and the ACT.

The occasion highlighted both the challenges of growing wheelchair sport in regional communities and the importance of ensuring teams belong to the communities they serve.

GIO is proud to support Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT as it helps more people experience the connection that sport can create.

We're thrilled to see a new Wheelchair Sports organisation launch in Victoria today. As fellow members of Wheelchair Sports Australia, the team from Wheelchair Sports Victoria will support Specialist Wheelchair Sports Clubs to deliver excellent sporting experiences for people with disabilities across their State.

We are Wheelchair Sports Victoria, the state arm of Wheelchair Sports Australia.

WSV like our sister organisation, Wheelchair Sports NSW / ACT exists to support grassroots wheelchair sports across our State.

With particular emphasis on Wheelchair AFL, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis and Para-athletics, WSV will work with sporting organisations, clubs, schools, communities and wheelchair users to build a stronger and more connected wheelchair sporting system across the state and provide a strong base competition pathways in wheelchair sports.

Managed by Leisure Networks, CEO David Meade explains, “Unlike NSW, Victoria doesn’t have an overarching wheelchair sports pathway model supported by a single strong base organisation, WSV changes that.

”We will build opportunities around people, bring wheelchair sport into more communities and make the pathway into participation welcoming, visible and easy to navigate,” says David.

Head of Wheelchair Sports Australia, CEO Mick Garnett believes Victoria has a unique window of opportunity, “Today marks six years until the Paralympic flame is lit in Brisbane and day-one of our ambition to make wheelchair sport more accessible across Victoria.

“Brisbane 2032 will put Paralympic sport at the centre of Australia’s attention, if we want to create a legacy for Victoria we must begin now.” says Mick.

Everyone deserves the chance to play!

A huge congratulations to the new National Champions!

Blues Wheelchair Basketball Club & the Manly Wheelchair Basketball Association have brought home gold in the Women’s & Open's National Wheelchair Basketball League.

A brilliant performance from both teams to claim the national title and finish the season on top.

Also a massive congratulations to the other NSW teams who made it all the way to the finals.

Wollongong Roller Hawks took out bronze and the Sydney Uni Lions Wheelchair Basketball Club placed 4th in the Women’s.

We’re incredibly proud of all four teams for representing NSW at the Wheelchair Basketball Australia National League.
