The Government is relying on disabled people, carers and families being too exhausted, overwhelmed or frightened to fight back.

Do not stay silent.

These proposed NDIS reforms risk:
• reducing supports
• increasing reassessments
• forcing people through inaccessible systems
• increasing reliance on unpaid carers
• narrowing who is considered “disabled enough”
• making it harder to challenge decisions
• pushing people toward crisis, segregation and institutional models of care

And while politicians talk about “sustainability”, women are already carrying enormous invisible labour behind closed doors to keep disabled family members safe and functioning.

Many disabled people only appear to be “coping” because somebody else is privately absorbing the cost.

That is not sustainability.
That is systemic neglect shifted onto families.

Disability advocates have warned the Albanese government’s planned overhaul of the NDIS risks repeating the very policy failures that led to the system’s creation in the first place.

“Beneath the language of sustainability lies a more uncomfortable question: whether Australia is once again mistaking cost displacement for economic reform,” said Muriel Cummins, occupational therapist and member of grassroots campaign Every Australian Counts

“When support is withdrawn, need does not disappear,” said Ms Cummins.

Yesterday I had a conversation with a friend that really stopped me in my tracks.

She told me about an article discussing the NDIS and how, in many ways, the funding can be viewed as a monetary calculation of the cost of caring. She said something along the lines of, “If the NDIS has lifted even 20% of the workload from carers, imagine the true dollar value of what carers do every single day.”

And honestly… that hit me hard.

When my own world changed years ago, I lost my career, our financial security, opportunities, our home, cars, all the tangible things you can easily place a dollar figure on. I understood those losses because society understands those losses. They’re measurable.

But it never truly occurred to me that the work I was doing as a full-time carer actually had value too.

The countless appointments.
The emotional regulation.
The advocacy.
The sleepless nights.
The constant hypervigilance.
The planning.
The researching.
The preventing crises before they happen.
The carrying of an entire family’s emotional wellbeing on your shoulders.

That labour is often invisible. Especially when it’s done by parents.

We talk so much about the “cost” of the NDIS spending growth, but rarely about what that figure actually represents. Behind those numbers are families who were previously carrying impossible loads alone, often at enormous financial, emotional and physical cost to themselves.

The rapid growth of the NDIS is not simply a story about government spending. It’s also a reflection of the true cost that families have quietly absorbed for decades behind closed doors.

And perhaps for the first time, some of that invisible labour is finally being recognised.

Please don’t burden families with 100% of that cost again. Not because families don’t love deeply enough, work hard enough, or sacrifice enough, but because the true cost of care was never sustainable for families to carry alone. And in reality, it is not sustainable for our society or government either.

Somewhere along the way, we have to stop pretending that unpaid care comes without a cost. ❤️

This week has been one filled with big emotions at W.I.L.L. ❤️

While we celebrated Misi reaching an incredible 6 years with us, we are preparing to say goodbye to a very loved member of our family, Sam.

This coming Saturday, Sam will be leaving Australia to begin an incredible new chapter in South Korea, where he will continue following a deeply meaningful personal and spiritual journey that has been part of his dream for many years.

Over the past 3 years, Sam has become such an important part of the lives of so many of our young people and families. This afternoon, hearing the kids reflect on their memories, adventures, conversations, and special moments with him did not leave a dry eye in the house.

Sam has brought so much kindness, patience, calmness, wisdom… and, if we’re being completely honest, just the right amount of cheekiness and chaos 😂 We are still slightly unsure how well monastery life is prepared for Sam, but we suppose they’re about to find out.

We are so incredibly proud of him for having the courage to follow a dream that means so much to him, even though saying goodbye is unbelievably hard.

Sam, thank you for every conversation, every laugh, every moment of support, and every relationship you built with our kids. You have left a mark on this place that will never be forgotten.

Please join us in wishing him all the happiness and success in this next chapter of his journey ❤️

Safe travels, Sam… and please try not to be too naughty over there!

Today marks 6 years with Komisi Gale. Six years of showing up, loving hard, staying calm in the chaos, and quietly changing lives in ways most people will never fully understand.
There are people who work in this industry… and then there are people like Misi. The rare ones. The ones who become part of the story of a family forever.
Over the years, he has walked beside so many of our young people through their hardest moments, the shutdowns, the meltdowns, the fears, the self-doubt, the isolation, the anger, the exhaustion. But somehow, with his patience, gentleness, humour and unwavering presence, he makes them feel safe enough to keep trying.
The difference he has made in the lives of so many of our kids is impossible to measure. Confidence that didn’t exist before. Trust rebuilt. Smiles where there used to be fear. Tiny moments that become life-changing moments.
And for my own child… there are no words big enough. Misi has been a steady hand, a safe place, a role model, a protector, and someone who saw the good even on the hardest days. The impact he has had on our family reaches far beyond what happens during a shift. He helped carry us through seasons that felt impossible.
He is truly one of a kind. An earth angel in human form.
Thank you, Misi, for every early morning, every hard conversation, every laugh, every calm response, every ounce of care you have poured into the people around you. Whole Self simply would not be what it is without you.
6 years today and what a gift those years have been. ❤️
You will always be my favourite brother 😜
