Who knew such a simple toy could create so many opportunities for communication? 💬✨

Spinning tops are a fun, engaging way to support your child’s early language development through play! Try modelling action words like spin, stop, go and fall, encouraging requests such as more, go and help, and introducing positional words like under and on.

You can also build in turn-taking and shared attention by taking turns to spin, stop and restart the fun!

Play might look simple from the outside, but so much learning is happening underneath! 🧸💛

Through play, children are developing communication, problem-solving, social skills, emotional regulation, motor skills and so much more, often without even realising they’re learning.

So the next time your child asks you to play for the hundredth time… remember, they’re doing some pretty important work! 😉✨

Thinking about seeing an Occupational Therapist but not sure if you need a referral?

For many families, the answer is no! You can contact an OT directly to enquire about an assessment or support, you don’t necessarily need to see your GP first.

There are some funding pathways and programs that may have their own referral or eligibility requirements, so it’s always worth checking what applies to your circumstances. If your not sure where to start, send us a message and our team can help point you in the right direction.

Sometimes the simplest games create the best opportunities for communication! 🗣️💬

You don’t need a fancy activity to work on language skills, a few minutes of play can be packed with opportunities to connect, listen, copy, describe and communicate.

Follow your child’s lead, get involved in the fun, and model language around whatever has captured their attention. The goal isn’t to turn play into a lesson, it’s to make communication part of the play. 💛

If you notice your child consistently producing their /s/ or /z/ sounds differently, it may be worth having their speech checked by a Speech Pathologist.

Early support can help identify what’s happening and give your child the tools they need to develop clearer, more accurate speech sounds.
