Thinking about hopping in an ice bath after a heavy session? 🧊 Before you take the plunge, it is worth checking if your recovery routine matches your specific goals.
While cold water immersion (CWI) is a popular tool for athletes, the latest evidence shows it might work against you if you are focused on building pure strength and muscle.

The "Strength Tax" πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ
Blunted Gains: Regular use of CWI after strength training can turn down the molecular signalling pathways and satellite cell activity required for muscle growth.

Smaller Results: Research has found that individuals who used CWI after lifting saw significantly smaller gains in muscle mass and fiber cross-sectional area compared to those who used active recovery.

The Adaptive Response: Passive recovery is often more desirable for preserving your body's natural response to strength training.

When to Use It? πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ
Endurance & Speed: CWI is effective for endurance athletes and doesn't appear to negatively impact those specific adaptations.
Short-Term Recovery: It remains a great tool for reducing muscle soreness (DOMS) perfect for tournament weekends or quick turnarounds between games.

The Pro Tip: If your main goal is hypertrophy and strength, consider skipping the ice on heavy lifting days.

Physio can make all the difference for a lateral ankle sprain. Let’s look closer at why seeking expert advice is key.

Grade 1 sprains usually mean mild tearing of your ligaments, resulting in minimal swelling and pain. In this case, you should find it comfortable to bear your full weight.

For Grade 2 sprains, you may experience a partial tear with moderate pain and bruising. We find most of our patients with Grade 2 sprains struggle to bear their own weight at first.

Grade 3 sprains are the most severe, with a complete tear. In addition to severe pain and bruising, you won’t be able to bear your weight. For this grade of sprain, a surgical assessment or long-term rehab might be in your future.

The infographic below shows how each grade can vary. By seeing a physio, you'll receive a correct diagnosis that gets you back on your feet quickly.
If you suspect an ankle sprain, don't delay – get in touch today! We're here to create a rehab plan tailored to your sprain.
