Tweddle Child & Family Health Service Tweddle is a statewide Early Parenting Centre here to support you and your family throughout the transition from pregnancy to parenting.

Tweddle is a state-wide Early Parenting Centre offering Residential, Day Stay, Telehealth and In-home support to parents of babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Tweddle’s experienced clinicians nurture child and caregiver relationships through sleep, play and connection, strengthening wellbeing, and building resilience. Today, the Minister for Children
Lizzie Blandthorn MP and Member for Northcote, Kat Theophanous MP, joined Tweddle Interim CEO Kent Burgess and Deputy Board Chair Kylie Scoullar to mark the beginning of construction for the new Northcote Early Parenting Centre.

This important milestone means construction of the new centre at 30 Green Street is now getting underway, bringing free, specialist early parenting support closer to home for families across Northcote and Melbourne’s inner and middle north.

When complete, the centre will provide 10 overnight family units, as well as consulting rooms, shared kitchen and dining spaces, a playroom and outdoor areas designed to feel like a home away from home.

Families will be able to access specialist support for children up to four years old, including help with:

🔹Sleep and settling
🔹Parent-child relationships
🔹Parenting Confidence
🔹Child and Family health and wellbeing

For Tweddle, this is a particularly special milestone. We’re proud to bring more than 100 years of experience supporting babies, young children and their families to Melbourne’s inner and middle north.

We know the early years of parenting can bring enormous joy, but they can also be challenging and exhausting. Having free, specialist support available closer to home can make a real difference when families need it most.

We’re grateful to the Victorian Government for entrusting Tweddle to operate the new Northcote Early Parenting Centre, and for its investment in expanding and upgrading the Early Parenting Centre network across Victoria.

Soon, a new centre will stand here to support generations of families.

💜Everyone has the right to feel safe growing up, at home, at work, and in the community.
 
Today, on Wear It Purple Day, we’re standing with LGBTQIA+ young people, families and staff, celebrating pride, courage and diversity.
 
The 2025 Minus18 National Youth Survey found that 89% of LGBTQIA+ young people had experienced bullying, harassment or violence in their lifetime, with 57% experiencing it in the past year.
 
🏳️‍🌈 But there’s another statistic to highlight. 86% said seeing someone wearing rainbow or ally accessories made them feel safer and more like they belonged.
 
That’s a reminder to everyone that visibility matters. We believe every child and young person deserves to grow up surrounded by safety, acceptance and people who celebrate who they are.
 
We wear purple to say: you are seen, you are valued, you belong, and you deserve to feel safe. 💜🏳️‍🌈

At Tweddle, our Early Parenting Practitioners know the importance of sharing stories with children from birth. Stories help:

During Children’s Book Week, we also pay tribute to Dolly Parton, whose incredible Imagination Library has helped bring books and the joy of reading to millions of children from birth.

Following her passing this week, we’re reminded of what an extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. What a legacy.

That’s why we are supporting Man With a Pram this Father’s Day.

This year marks 10 years of Man With A Pram. What started as a simple idea has grown into a national movement, walking for perinatal mental health and in 2026 we’re celebrating a decade of dads and families walking together.

1 in 10 dads will experience perinatal anxiety or depression in the first six months of a child’s life. That’s around 83 dads every day.

Man With A Pram exists to change that, one walk at a time.

Today, Tweddle Interim CEO Kent Burgess took a trip back in time when 1939 Tweddle baby Jim Hevey returned to Tweddle’s Footscray Early Parenting Centre.
 
On 8 August 1939, Jim was brought to Tweddle on the night of his birth, weighing just 2 pounds 5 ounces and not expected to survive the night. He remained at Tweddle for three and a half months, leaving at nearly eight pounds.
 
Now, 87 years later, Jim returned to the place that played such an important role in his survival.
 
Jim has been a wonderful custodian of Tweddle’s history. In 2015, he researched and documented Tweddle’s story, later updating the book for Tweddle’s Centenary. His remarkable work is now available online through the Tweddle Historical Centenary website.
 
Jim’s story also provides a glimpse into how different life was for babies and families in the early decades of the 20th century.
 
Reflecting on his own story, Jim says: “There is no doubt in my mind that I owe my survival to the treatment and expertise of the medical staff and nurses at that time.”
 
Jim’s story reminds us of the many thousands of babies who have come through Tweddle over the past century and gone on to live full lives and have families of their own.
 
Kent was struck by Jim’s wealth of knowledge, including more than 70 years of memories and stories from Melbourne’s western suburbs.
 
“We feel privileged that Jim continues to share his story with us, connecting Tweddle’s history with the families we support today, and the generations to come.”

The Tweddle Board, Executive, management and staff congratulate
Ingrid Stitt MP on her appointment as the Minister for Health by Premier Ben Carroll.

The Victorian Government’s $168m investment in the statewide Early Parenting Centres expansion and upgrade program ensures help for families with babies and young children is much closer to home.

This investment has enabled Tweddle to expand our support for families through our upgraded Footscray facility, our new Wyndham Early Parenting Centre and the upcoming Northcote service, bringing specialist early parenting support to more families across Melbourne’s north and west.

Today Tweddle staff and families celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day.

Led by SNAICC, the National Voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children, the day celebrates the strength, pride and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, while recognising every child’s right to grow up strong in culture, connected to family, community and Country.

As an Early Parenting Centre, we know the earliest years of life shape lifelong health, wellbeing and identity. We also recognise that culture is a powerful protective factor that strengthens belonging, resilience and connection.

Today our centres are celebrating with First Nations-inspired craft and storytelling, SNAICC Children’s Day bags for our families, and plenty of fun with SNAICC’s Bushland Animal Yoga Cards.

As we reflect on the importance of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families every day, we’re also marking one year since launching our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, which continues to guide our commitment to learning, listening and working in partnership with First Nations communities.

“All the Tweddle staff are amazing, from the first point of call, reception, Anums, EPP’s, play educator, all the way to the cleaning coordinator’s and the man who cleans the dishes & kitchen at night! Everyone has an important role to make Tweddle the special place that it is. Everyone is so lovely and very kind! I won’t hesitate to come back if I need more help within this year.”

😴Most come for sleep and settling guidance, not expecting to be supported by a team. But this mum’s feedback shows how everyone is working together to help babies, children and their families thrive, learning about play, attachment, development, and secure relationships.

Message from Tweddle’s Board Chair Annette Mercuri.
 
On behalf of the Board of Tweddle, I am delighted to welcome Kent Burgess, who commences today as Tweddle’s Interim Chief Executive Officer.
 
As an organisation with a proud history of supporting babies, children and families, we are entering an important and exciting period.

With the proposed merger with QEC progressing, this is a significant time for Tweddle, and we are pleased to have Kent joining us to help lead the organisation through this next chapter.
 
Kent brings extensive leadership expertise across health care and community services, with significant CEO and executive experience, along with a proven track record of leading through change while focusing on high-quality client and community centred care for those most in need.
 
The Board, Executive Team and all Tweddle staff look forward to working closely with Kent to ensure our critical work continues uninterrupted to provide the exceptional care and support for which Tweddle is known.

Tweddle’s greatest strength has always been its people. Our dedicated staff, strong clinical expertise, collaborative culture and commitment to families are respected across the sector.

These strengths provide a solid foundation as we continue to evolve and embrace our new leadership team.
