Today is National Sorry Day in Australia. An anniversary that isnโt a celebration, rather observes the release of the Bringing them Home Report by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. The report was an inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their families between 1910 to 1970. The report documents the Australian legislation that removed children to assimilate to live a western lifestyle, but also noted merging of Aboriginal people to live western lifestyles in segregated communities, such practise were part of Colonisation of Australia.
Today we acknowledge the enduring strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who continue to share their culture and history, whilst living with intergenerational trauma. We will always commit to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and continue to build trust in receiving culturally safe services, programs and health information.
