SORRY DAY FACT: The inquiry leading to the estimated that between 1 in 10 and 1 in 3 Indigenous children were FORCIBLY removed from their families between 1910 and 1970.
Yesterday, Primary Care Connect staff including our CEO and Chair of the First Nations Working Group attended the Shepparton Sorry Day Commemoration, held annually on 26 May ahead of the beginning of .reconciliation.week (NRW).
Hosted by the Shepparton Region Reconciliation Action Group, the commemoration was, as always, a moving and important opportunity for community members to come together in reflection, respect and truth-telling — honouring the Stolen Generations and acknowledging the ongoing impact of past government policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
The ceremony featured powerful cultural performances, inlcuding a heartfelt Welcome to Country in language and a smoking ceremony by Dr. Neil Morris, stories and moments of remembrance that highlighted both the pain carried across generations and the strength, resilience and leadership of First Nations peoples.
PCC leaders and staff were honoured to stand alongside community, Elders and local organisations in recognising this significant day, marking the 1997 tabling of the report.
